Wolverines Defeat Freedom 8-2, Run Record To 7-1

The Lady Wolverines softball team improved their record to 7-1 on the season as they defeated Freedom 8-2 on Monday evening at Stiefel Park.

In what is becoming a season trend, the Wolverines struck early in the contest with three runs in the first inning.

With one out, Kyla Servick doubled and moved to third as Aliya Garroway’s grounder to third was misplayed. Both runners scored on a single by Maria Ioanilli. Ioanilli used her wheels from there as she stole second and third and then scored as the ball got past the third baseman.

Freedom cut the lead to 3-1 with back to back doubles in the second inning by Young and Ferrell.

The Wolverines answered quickly in the home half of the second as they stretched their lead to 7-1.

Ellie Kalantzis walked and stole second. She moved to third on a double to right by Angie Nardone. Both scored as Garroway lined a double into right center. After a walk to Ioanilli, Mollie Street plated both Garroway and Ioanilli with a line shot three-base error off the left fielder’s glove.

Ellwood City tacked on its last run in the sixth as Angie Nardone smacked her second double of the game and scored on a single by Servick.

Six Wolverines contributed eight hits to the winning effort. Angie Nardone and Servick had two hits apiece. Garroway and Keira Rozanski added doubles while Ioanilli and Kali Barnett each had singles.

Freshman pitcher Julia Nardone gave up two runs, one earned and yielded just 5 hits to collect her victory for Ellwood City. Nardone had four strikeouts and just one walk.

The Wolverines, (7-1 Overall, 2-1 Section) will be right back at it on Tuesday afternoon as Beaver Falls visits Stiefel Park for a 5:00 p.m. section tilt.

OF NOTE:

Ellwood City Varsity baseball team fell 5-2 to Hopewell on Monday despite a 3-hit performance by second baseman Noah Magill. The section loss put the Wolverines at 4-7 overall, but 4-1 in section play on the season. The teams play again Tuesday in Ellwood City with sole possession of first place in Section 1-3A at stake.
