#11 Seed Riverside Turns The Table, Stuns Laurel In WPIAL Quarterfinals

Panther Freshman right fielder Ava Cummings collected three hits in four at bats as the #11 seeded Riverside Lady Panthers defeated #3 seed Laurel Varsity Spartans 11-1 on Monday in the WPIAL Class 2A Quarterfinals. The upset victory avenged a pair of lopsided losses to the Spartans during the regular season. Cummings singled in the fifth inning, doubled in the seventh inning, and singled in the fourth inning to power the offense. Older sister, Joci Cummings, earned the win for Riverside. CLASS 3A BASEBALL Top overall seed Riverside (13-2, 9-1 Section 1) will look to collect yet another WPIAL title behind winningest coach in WPIAL history, Dan Oliastro, with its opening round game Tuesday at Seneca Valley HS. The Panthers await the winner of #16 Shady Side Academy and #17 McGuffey who play Monday. Three Victories In WPIAL Opening Round Action

All three local teams competing Tuesday in the opening round of their respective WPIAL playoffs earned victories. RIVERSIDE 4 KEYSTONE OAKS 1 Hunter Garvin and Zack Hare combined for a no-hitter as top seeded Riverside earned a 4-1 victory over Keystone Oaks on Tuesday. Hare struck out nine batters on the afternoon but Keystone Oaks scored the games first run in the fourth inning without the aid of a hit. Ellwood City used a late rally, on the road, Monday to earn a 6-4 victory against unbeaten section foe Central Valley. After training 4-0 entering the top of the six inning, the Wolverines struck for four runs and added two more in the seventh to pull away to victory. Ellie Kalantzis connected on a pivotal home run in the sixth inning rally and Kiley LeViere singled in the frame to knot the score. The Lady Panthers rallied late to tie things up in the seventh and won it in the eighth on a clutch two out, two strike single by Aliya Ottaviani. Senior Samantha Rosenberger swatted a solo home run at the plate and struck out 15 Freedom Bulldogs on the mound Wednesday as the Lady Panthers defeated Freedom 8-4. Riverside raced out to an 8-0 advantage before the host Bulldogs gathered four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Both Ellwood City and Riverside softball teams will enter their 2023 regular season campaigns with sights set on returning to the WPIAL Playoffs, continuing streaks for both teams.
