Panther Freshman right fielder Ava Cummings collected three hits in four at bats as the #11 seeded Riverside Lady Panthers defeated #3 seed Laurel Varsity Spartans 11-1 on Monday in the WPIAL Class 2A Quarterfinals. The upset victory avenged a pair of lopsided losses to the Spartans during the regular season. All three local teams competing Tuesday in the opening round of their respective WPIAL playoffs earned victories. RIVERSIDE 4 KEYSTONE OAKS 1 Hunter Garvin and Zack Hare combined for a no-hitter as top seeded Riverside earned a 4-1 victory over Keystone Oaks on Tuesday. Hare struck out nine batters on the afternoon but Keystone Oaks scored the games first run in the fourth inning without the aid of a hit. Senior Samantha Rosenberger swatted a solo home run at the plate and struck out 15 Freedom Bulldogs on the mound Wednesday as the Lady Panthers defeated Freedom 8-4. Riverside raced out to an 8-0 advantage before the host Bulldogs gathered four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Both Ellwood City and Riverside softball teams will enter their 2023 regular season campaigns with sights set on returning to the WPIAL Playoffs, continuing streaks for both teams.
