Wrona, Mohawk Use Aerial Attack To Down Ellwood City 38-14

Jay Wrona tossed four touchdowns, including one with time expired in the first half, to lead Mohawk to its 38-14 victory Friday night at Helling Stadium. The section-leading Warriors used the arm of Wrona and a stout defense to earn the victory. The WPIAL’s leading rusher, Elijah Palmer-McCane was bottled up on the ground, finishing with just 35 yards on 11 carries for the Wolverines. An opportunistic Golden Beavers football team racked up 475 yards of total offense on its way to a 41-18 victory over Ellwood City Friday Night. The Western Beaver offense accounted for only 9 first downs in the contest and possessed the ball for only 15:51 (compared to Ellwood City’s 32:09 minutes of possession) but used quick scoring drives and big scoring plays to post six touchdowns and earn its road victory. Chris Smiley threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Ellwood City Wolverines to a 34-14 victory over Freedom Friday Night at Helling Stadium. The section victory improved the surging Wolverines record to 3-1 on the season – already eclipsing their win total from last year. Ellwood City used a 17-yard fourth quarter touchdown run by running back Elijah Palmer-McCane to break at 12-12 tie and lead the Wolverines to its 25-12 victory over Carlynton Friday night at Helling Stadium. Palmer-McCane rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns on the evening as the Wolverines collected over 200 yards on the ground rushing as a team. Ellwood City saw two, early 14-point advantages disappear on Friday as the Wolverines fell to Union Area 34-21 at Helling Stadium. The Wolverines collected the first two scores of the contest and a momentum-swinging 90-yard fumble return by Deklan O’Brien put Ellwood City ahead 21-7 midway through the second quarter. However, the Wolverine offense stalled in the second half and the visiting Scotties roared back with 27 unanswered points to earn the victory. Palmer-McCain Runs Wild, Wolverines Collect Road Victory Over Lions

Elijah Palmer-McCain ran wild Friday night, collecting 231 yards on 32 carries and accounting for all three of offensive touchdowns for Ellwood City as the Wolverines collected their second victory of the season, a 18-13 road triumph over New Brighton. The sophomore runningback took the Wolverine’s first play from scrimmage 63 yards to the endzone for a touchdown and scored on an 8-yard run in the second quarter to give the Ellwood City a 12-0 halftime advantage. Wolverines Fall Short In Season Opening Loss At Brentwood

Week Zero is officially in the books for the WPIAL as over 100 teams were in uniform during the Friday/Saturday action. The Wolverines made a trip down to Brentwood High School to take on the Spartans to begin the 2022 football campaign. Both teams in recent years have had a tough time on the gridiron, but the game did not disappoint. ECASD Hires Head Football Coach; Approves COVID Health and Safety Plan

The Ellwood City Area School District’s Board of Directors hired Daniel Bradley to serve as head coach of varsity football. Bradley received unanimous support from the board. He will be paid $7,000. “The students are elated,” said Brian Partridge, football boosters president, who was in attendance at the meeting. Bradley has a decade of experience serving as head coach. During that time, he has a 80-33 record. He has appeared in four WPIAL title games, with a winning title in 2018. Sam Hughes scampered for two touchdowns to lead the Riverside Panthers to their first victory of the season, a 19-0 victory over rival Ellwood City on Friday night during Homecoming at Riverside’s Memorial Stadium. Madeline Dimeo was named Riverside Homecoming Queen during halftime. Hughes, who finished with 90 yards rushing, scored from 21 years and 19 yards while Brady Barton found the endzone on a 45 yard touchdown for the Panthers (1-4, 1-6 overall).
