Wolverines Fall Short In Season Opening Loss At Brentwood

Week Zero is officially in the books for the WPIAL as over 100 teams were in uniform during the Friday/Saturday action. The Wolverines made a trip down to Brentwood High School to take on the Spartans to begin the 2022 football campaign. Both teams in recent years have had a tough time on the gridiron, but the game did not disappoint. ECASD Hires Head Football Coach; Approves COVID Health and Safety Plan

The Ellwood City Area School District’s Board of Directors hired Daniel Bradley to serve as head coach of varsity football. Bradley received unanimous support from the board. He will be paid $7,000. “The students are elated,” said Brian Partridge, football boosters president, who was in attendance at the meeting. Bradley has a decade of experience serving as head coach. During that time, he has a 80-33 record. He has appeared in four WPIAL title games, with a winning title in 2018. PHOTOS: Panthers Earn Homecoming Victory Over Wolverines

Sam Hughes scampered for two touchdowns to lead the Riverside Panthers to their first victory of the season, a 19-0 victory over rival Ellwood City on Friday night during Homecoming at Riverside’s Memorial Stadium. Madeline Dimeo was named Riverside Homecoming Queen during halftime. Hughes, who finished with 90 yards rushing, scored from 21 years and 19 yards while Brady Barton found the endzone on a 45 yard touchdown for the Panthers (1-4, 1-6 overall). Congratulations are in order for the 2021 Ellwood City Homecoming Queens, Alyssa Jeffcoat and Kyla Servick, and the Homecoming King, Alexander Roth. All parties were recognized during the Friday evening football game at Helling Stadium as part of Homecoming festivities. The host Wolverines were defeated by Neshannock 58-14. Riverside used the ground attack to run over the host Wolverines 27-12 Friday night at Helling Stadium. Calvin Hughes led the ground attack for Riverside finishing with 169 yards rushing on 28 carries and a score while quarterback Sam Hughes scored twice on the ground and finished with 41 yards rushing for the victorious Panthers. The Wolverines were wiped out 19-0 by visiting Western Beaver on Friday night as part of the Ellwood City homecoming festivities. Saylee Grinnen was crowned 2019 Homecoming Queen at halftime. Big plays doomed the Ellwood City, as a 94-yard first quarter touchdown run, kick-started what became on offensive onslaught by Neshannock as the visiting Lancers routed the Wolverines 44-0 Friday night. The Lancers used five scoring plays of over 30 yards, including two scoring runs of 55+ yards, to race away to victory. Nathan Sciarro accounted for three scores Friday night for Riverside while Ben Hughes tossed three touchdown strikes, but the biggest score of the game – a late 2-point conversion – was thwarted by Freedom and the Bulldogs escaped with a 31-30 victory over the Panthers. Ellwood City Varsity Football Head Coach Contract Terminated

The Ellwood City Area School District has terminated the contract of varsity head coach Nick Hand. Hand stepped down prior to the 2018 season due to an illness.
