Wrona, Mohawk Use Aerial Attack To Down Ellwood City 38-14

Jay Wrona tossed four touchdowns, including one with time expired in the first half, to lead Mohawk to its 38-14 victory Friday night at Helling Stadium.

The section-leading Warriors used the arm of Wrona and a stout defense to earn the victory.

The WPIAL’s leading rusher, Elijah Palmer-McCane was bottled up on the ground, finishing with just 35 yards on 11 carries for the Wolverines. Ellwood City was held to only 111 yards rushing as a team.

In the game that featured a combined 63 pass attempts and 446 yards by both quarterbacks, Wrona racked up 271 yards (21-39 passing) while Ellwood City’s Chris Smiley finished with 175 yards (12-24 passing). Michael Walters hauled in a team-high five passes for 62 yards receiving, highest among the five Wolverines who collected passes on the evening.

Wrona now has a combined nine touchdowns against his 16117-zip code opponents after he accounted for five touchdowns earlier this month when the Warriors defeated Riverside. Wrona now has a Mohawk single-season record of 25 total touchdowns on the year (thru six games).

Defensively, Kaden Docchio and Richard Cureton each had six tackles and a pass break up respectively. Docchio collected one tackle for a loss. Palmer-McCane collected an interception and return for 28 yards in the second quarter. He scored on the next possession on a 2-yard touchdown run.

Ellwood City (3-3 Overall), on a two-game losing skid, will next host New Brighton for its Homecoming game on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
