A New Castle man was arrested last month after attempted to pass a fraudulent $100 bill at a local gas station. Jaycob Heasley, 18, of New Castle, was arrested on charges of theft by deception, driving under the influence, and driving the wrong way, after police pursued the suspect and conducted a traffic stop shortly after the fraudulent bill was presented in an attempt to purchase a bag of Skittles at Uni-Mart just after midnight on August 16, 2019. EC Varsity Softball Team Defeats Hopewell, Earns 10-Win Regular Season

The Lady Wolverines closed out section play strongly as they defeated Hopewell Thursday afternoon by a score of 9-0.  The team improves to 10-5 on the season and finished section play with a record of 7-3. Makinley Magill got things started in the top of the second as she laced a double into left-center field.  Magill scored as Kyla Servick’s perfectly placed bunt single was thrown into right field for a two-base error.  Ariana Garroway walked with two outs to put runners on first and third.  Garroway and Servick then executed a double steal to plate the second run. Skating Into The Top 3, Hess Ice Rink Looks To Cash In

A local ice rink, Hess Ice Rink in New Castle, has been selected as one of the three finalists for a “Renovate the Rink” contest co-hosted by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Voting opened Friday, February 1st and runs through Friday, February 22nd. This contest was introduced in October of 2018 as a new contest. This contest is hosted by Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Commercial Construction (PittComm). The winner will receive up to $100,000 in goods and services to renovate their rink. On Wednesday, October 24, the 22nd annual Operation Safe Stop will be conducted in communities across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This event is apart of National School Bus Safety Week, which runs from Monday, October 22 to Friday, October 26. Mr. Angelo M. Prestopine, 85, of Ellwood City passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at his residence. Mr. Prestopine was born on March 29, 1933 in Ellwood City to the late Michael J. and Gilda E. (Docchio) Prestopine. He had attended Lincoln High School and was a member of the Holy Redeemer parish. Angelo had worked at the Babcock & Wilcox Steel Mill in Beaver Falls for 37 years. BC3 Golf Outing Draws 110, Raises Record $90K to Support Student Scholarships

Potter Baseball Tour Stops In Ellwood City

The Potter Baseball Tour made its ninth annual stop in Ellwood City on Friday, July 13. Led by former Ellwood City baseball standout Jeff Potter, the tour visits over 30 cities in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and Virginia throughout July. The first tour game was played nine years ago on July 2, 2010 at Sanders Field. Since then the tour has become a staple in towns throughout the Middle Atlantic states. Sara I. Vaneman, 100, of Old Pittsburgh Rd. , New Castle passed away Saturday, June 23, 2018 at the Haven Nursing Home following a short illness.
