68th Ellwood City Little League Tournament Begins This Week

The 68th Ellwood City Little League Tournament, the oldest tournament in the area, began Tuesday night at Friedhoff Field in Ewing Park. New Brighton squared off against Neshannock on Tuesday in the opening game. Ellwood City will meet Saxonburg on Wednesday at 6:00 PM.  Ellwood City will be seeking its first championship since 2008.  Wilmington collected the tournament championship last year while Riverside has been crown champion three times in the last 10 years. Riverside Senior Shines But Misses Cut For U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship

Justin Hand, a soon-to-be-senior at Riverside High School, finished with a second-round 77 last Tuesday, missing the cut after his first two rounds (76+77=153) at the 2019 US Junior Amateur Championship. Hand had qualified for the tournament after finishing first in a field of 46 golfers at a sectional qualifier held in June at Grove City Country Club. Three players finished -4 to top the leaderboard after two days. Riverside’s Hand Finishes Strong In Opening Round at US Junior Amateur Championship

Riverside’s Justin Hand posted an opening-round 76 (+5) on Monday in the 72nd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at historic Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. After struggling on the front nine of the round, including posting a triple-bogey, Hand settled down and fired a two-under 34 on the back-nine to level out to his first-round 76. The round sets him tied for 64th place out of 156 golfers. Upcoming Tennis Mini-Clinic Planned In Ewing Park

There will be a youth tennis clinic hosted by the Ellwood City Girls tennis team and coaches, marking this year as the 5th year of holding the clinic. “We want kids to find interest in playing tennis and learning about the game,” said girls tennis head coach John DiBuono. The clinic will be held on July 8th, 9th, and 10th from 10:00 to 11:30 at the Ewing park courts. The clinic, open to children 5 to 12, costs $25. Commemorative Photo Planned For Penn-Ohio Alumni

ATTENTION: For any former high school football players who have played in a Penn-Ohio Classic football game, there is a planned commemorative photo for all ex-players scheduled next week. According to Lincoln High School Athletic Director Curt Agostinelli, the photo is planned to take place on Wednesday, June 19th at Blackhawk High School at 6:45 pm. BC3 Places 7th In National Golf Championships; Pioneers’ Morgan 1 Stroke Short Of All-american

(Chautauqua, N.Y.) For the second consecutive year, a Butler County Community College golfer fell just short of All-American status at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III national championships at Chautauqua Golf Club. Noah Morgan, a sophomore and graduate of Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School in Foxburg, finished the four-round tournament with a 318 and 1 stroke behind a Georgia golfer who placed 18th. Wolverines Can’t Catch Up To Keystone Oaks

Ellwood City fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 7-4 loss to Keystone Oaks in the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals Wednesday. The Wolverines lost despite out-hitting Keystone Oaks 11 to seven.  Keystone Oaks collected four of their hits in a six-run first inning. In the first inning, Keystone Oaks got their offense started with two walks and two fielding errors by Ellwood City. Ellwood Wrestler Representing Team Pennsylvania

Lincoln High School wrestler Austin Walley recently finished third in both the Freestyle and Greco-Roman Pennsylvania/USA Wrestling State Championships held at Central Mountain High School in Lock Haven. His performance qualified him to compete at the US Marine Corps/USAW Junior National Championships for the third straight year.  The tournament will be held July 12-19 in Fargo, North Dekoda.  Walley will also represent Team Pennsylvania at the USA Wrestling Junior National Duals in Tulsa, Oklahoma June 18-22.

Lady Wolverines Collect Another Upset, Advance In WPIAL Playoffs

The Ellwood City Wolverines softball team rallied and nabbed the lead late in an 11-10 victory over South Allegheny on Monday in the second round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs. The victory over the #2 seed South Allegheny team was the Wolverines second consecutive extra-inning victory after knocking off Freeport last week. The game was tied at ten with Wolverines batting in the top of the ninth when senior Natalia Greco doubled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring the decisive run. Riverside Boys Qualify For State Track & Field Championships

After taking home their third consecutive WPIAL Track & Field Championship, the Panther team victories seem to continue on. Ten boys on the track and field team have qualified for the state championships within eight relay and independent events. The relay teams going are the 4×800 relay team consisting of Ty Fluharty, Chase Grinnell, Garrett Safern, and Colby Belczyk placed 4th, the 4×100 relay took 2nd place, while also gaining a new school record of 43.55, which consisted of Brett Hart, Jackson Coyne, Nate Sciarro, Calvin Wetzel, and the 4×400 relay team consisting of Hart, Coyne, Wetzel, and Alex Nour…
