SPORTS: The Streak Is Over!; RHS Tennis Defeats Wolverines; EC Volleyball Remains Unbeaten

The longest losing streak (27 games) in the WPIAL is officially over as the Wolverines cruised to their first victory in 4 years, defeating the Carlynton Cougars 46-6 on Friday night. The Cougars started the night off with electing to receive the ball after winning the coin toss, showing that they wanted to start on offense early. This back fired quickly as a fumble recovery by #20 Jackson Kerr at the 10:35 mark set up the Wolverines with great field position at the Cougars 35 yard line. The Ellwood City Lady Wolverines finished Week One of volleyball on a high note, earning a three-set sweep of the rival Riverside Panthers on Saturday afternoon. The victory came after defeating the South Side Rams 3-2 on Thursday. On Saturday, serving and front row play was the name of the game in this one as the Wolverines earned a convincing victory against rival Riv-Ell Cup Riverside Panthers. Ellwood City Girls Volleyball has officially started for the Lady Wolverines as they defeated the Ambridge Bridgers in three straight sets to pick up the early season victory. The Wolverines came right out of the gate, having a double-digit lead in the first set, ultimately winning 25-19. Ellwood City did one better yet in the second set, winning 25-18 to go up two sets to none. Wolverines Fall Short In Season Opening Loss At Brentwood

Week Zero is officially in the books for the WPIAL as over 100 teams were in uniform during the Friday/Saturday action. The Wolverines made a trip down to Brentwood High School to take on the Spartans to begin the 2022 football campaign. Both teams in recent years have had a tough time on the gridiron, but the game did not disappoint. All-American Reisinger Returns For Nationally Ranked BC3 Volleyball Squad

Ellwood City graduate Breanna Reisinger headlines a group of decorates starters returning to the The Butler County Community College volleyball squad this fall. Two All-Americans, a middle hitter selected to a national championship all-tournament team, and three other starters who as first-year players in 2021 led the Pioneers to a 12th consecutive winning season and a sixth-place national finish. Outside hitter Reisinger and setter Morgan Jack in December became the first teammates in program history to be named National Junior College Athletic Association All-Americans following the same season. FORE! Ellwood City Co-Ed Golf Off To Fast Start

Ellwood City Co-Ed Golf Team is enjoying some early season success, collecting victories in its first two matches of the season. The Wolverines opened up the season with a home victory over Union on Friday (223-259) and collected another victory at home on Tuesday, defeating New Castle (214-256). On Friday, three Ellwood golfers – Jordan Keller, Nathan Williams, and Mitch Covert – posted rounds of 44 to pace the host Wolverines.  Colten Crizer was low man with a score of 43 while Mady McCommons posted a round of 48 to round out the scoring for Ellwood City.  Rocco Galmarini posted…

Melfi Collected His First Delmar Golf Course Club Championship

The 62nd Annual Delmar Golf Course Club Championship was held August 6 and August 7, 2022. Brandon Melfi collected his first club championship with a two day total of even par 144 to win by a stroke over Sam Barry Jr. and three strokes over Broc Boariu and Mike Vucilich. Vucelich collected the A-Flight title and Carson Cappello captured the B-Flight championship by one stroke over Colten Crizer. GOING, GOING, GONE: Biondi Wins Ellwood City Little League Tournament Home Run Derby

Ellwood City’s Gino Biondi won the 21st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Home Run Derby. Biondi belted nine home runs to win the competition. Liam Connelly of West View/Ross Township and Tim McElhaney tied for second place with six home runs. Cam Mills of Ellwood City and Kaden Troung of West View/Ross Township smacked five home runs. The competition included 32 contestants from the eight teams in the tournament.
