This week has been much warmer than last, and by Saturday we should be seeing temperatures into the 50’s. Unfortunately the mild temperatures will not last; according to the Weather Channel, Friday will see a high of 51 degrees, Saturday back down to a high of 21, and Sunday with a high of 18. The public has been on the edge of their seats waiting for the results of the River of the Year contest, which were finally announced this week. ELLWOOD CITY — The Ellwood City United Fund has entered its final month of fundraising, fundraising chairman Chip Campbell fears that this years goal may go unmet. The local United Fund organization has been collecting donations since October 2017 with the money raised benefiting and supporting the efforts of the eight (8) agencies that serve the Ellwood City area and beyond. Though donations are being accepted until January 31, 2018, as of now, the organization is looking to come up $9,224.00 short of its goal of $ 50,000.00. A small portion of 6th Street, in between Crescent and Lawrence Avenue, has been completely closed off until further notice due to a water leak. The water company is currently at the scene trying to fix the problem – which has left some residents without water. There is no time estimate that has been given when the water will be working again for those residents nor when the road will be back open.

HARRISBURG – A recent terror attack on police at the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex prompted state Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) today to unveil new legislation, which would limit life insurance payouts of individuals who die committing acts of terrorism. Yesterday, Ellwood City Borough Council voted 5-2 not to renew [previous] Borough Manager Robert Villella’s contract for another two years – effectively ending his term yesterday. Starting today, a collaborated effort between the new Council President Judith Dici, council, and the other Borough employees, will be used in place of the Borough Manager to perform day-to-day duties while council searches for an individual replacement. Portersville Christian School will hold an Information Night/Open House at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 9, for families interested in enrolling students for the 2018-2019 school year. The school is accepting student applications and registrations prior to the release of next year’s tuition schedule at the end of March.
