OLD PHOTO FRIDAY: Connoquenessing Creek Overflowing 1970’s

This week’s Old Photo Friday, courtesy of the Ellwood City Historical Society is a photo of Ellwood City’s Mckim Way flooded when the Connoquenessing Creek overflowed. Its banks rose to a three-foot level in some of the cottages, while outside water was waist high in some places. Homes and cottages were evacuated when water rose at a rapid pace and after it crested. Do you remember the overflow of the Connoquenessing Creek? Did you or your family have to evacuate? Visitors Ask Ellwood School Board to Reconsider Removing Baseball Field Lights

Visitors representing Ellwood City area baseball organizations urged council to reconsider its decision to remove the lights from Sanders Field, arguing that the district’s baseball program will decline without the ability to play night games. The wooden light poles were installed in the early 1950’s and became a hallmark of the Ellwood area’s baseball program. At its January meeting, the board voted 6-3 to remove the wooden light poles following an accident in August when a pole collapsed, injuring a 13-year old girl and a man. BodyShop Sets the TONE for Group Fitness

BodyShop Group Fitness, Ellwood City’s longest running fitness establishment, is excited to bring the newest group fitness class from Les Mills to the area.  The BodyShop, located in Creekside Commons at 324 Wampum Ave, is adding Les Mills TONE to their catalog of classes with a launch party on May 16, with two sessions: 5:30pm and 6:30pm. Riverside High School Junior/Senior Prom and After-Prom

Riverside High School will celebrate their Junior Senior prom on Friday, May 11. The prom will take place at Shakespeare’s following the coronation ceremony. Students also have the option to participate in the after prom festivities that will take place at Shakespeare’s from Midnight to 5 am. Parents, family and friends are invited to view the coronation of the prom king and prom queen in the auditorium. Tickets are available for purchase starting April 30, in room 208 of the high school. Ellwood City Residents Turn Properties Into Beautiful Landscapes

Mayor Court has announced that once again Ellwood City residents will turn their properties into beautiful landscapes, bring the neighborhoods back to life for everyone to enjoy. This will be the 8th year that Mayor Court will present “Beautification Awards” and restaurant certificates to six (6) area residents who are nominated for taking pride in their properties throughout Ellwood City. Residents are encouraged to participate, by both beautifying your properties or by nominating someone you feel does a great job in making their property stand out in the neighborhood. Ellwood City’s Own Clock Tower Fairy

Cassandra Douglas, Ellwood City Native has written a children’s book centered on the Ellwood City Lincoln Clock Tower. “The Clock Tower Fairy: Ellwood City Tales Book One,” is about a timekeeping fairy, who has to change the clock every hour when her sand timer runs out. The book takes you on a journey of uncertainty, where the clock tower fairy wants to take the night off from changing the time because she is tired. Ellwood City JR High Softball Team Remains Undefeated

The good news for Blackhawk was that they scored the first run of the game. The bad news was The Lady Wolverines scoring the next 18 runs to win in a 3 inning mercy rule shortened game Monday evening at Stiefel Park. Mollie Street led the offense with a triple and single. Kali Barnett also tripled off the fence in centerfield and Kyla Servick doubled. Aliya Garroway, Angie Nardone, Grace Balin, Jenna Vetica, and Kaylani Leos all contributed singles. PHOTO GALLERY: Lincoln High School After Prom

An Ellwood City tradition continued Friday, May 4 at Sons of Italy Hall. For the 71st consecutive year Lincoln High School juniors, seniors and their guests enjoyed the after prom party provided by the Ellwood City After Prom Committee. The prom king and queen of the night were, King Jarrett Lubich and Queen Grace Blake. DJ Ken Raisor of Sabre David Entertainment provided the music for dancing.
