Ellwood City defeated Rochester 64-62 on Wednesday after an evenly matched game that saw neither team lead by more than six points. Four metered parking spaces next to the Municipal Building on 6th Street have been blocked off due to a water leak causing excess ice. The water company has identified the problem and will be working to fix it in the near future. Anyone who needs to go to the Municipal Building is urged to park at the Lawrence Avenue spaces until further notice.
HARRISBURG – A recent terror attack on police at the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex prompted state Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) today to unveil new legislation, which would limit life insurance payouts of individuals who die committing acts of terrorism. The proposal also calls for a portion of the terrorist’s life insurance benefits to be redirected to victims. “I don’t believe you deserve to keep your life insurance benefits if you intentionally steal the lives of innocent Americans,” Bernstine said. “We shouldn’t allow terrorism to be rewarded.” House Bill 1996 would allow insurance companies to limit payouts to beneficiaries named on…
Yesterday, Ellwood City Borough Council voted 5-2 not to renew [previous] Borough Manager Robert Villella’s contract for another two years – effectively ending his term yesterday. Starting today, a collaborated effort between the new Council President Judith Dici, council, and the other Borough employees, will be used in place of the Borough Manager to perform day-to-day duties while council searches for an individual replacement. Portersville Christian School will hold an Information Night/Open House at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 9, for families interested in enrolling students for the 2018-2019 school year. The school is accepting student applications and registrations prior to the release of next year’s tuition schedule at the end of March. In addition to kindergarten, there are openings in most grade levels for fall of 2018. Bags on the meters along Lawrence Avenue will be taken off in the upcoming days, ending the two-hour free parking in Downtown Ellwood for the holiday season. Anyone parked without paying the meter between the hours of 9am-5pm is subject to a $5.00 fine.
A dog park is longed for by many Ellwood and surrounding area residents, including a woman named Ashley Fisher, a resident of North Sewickley, who decided it’s time to initiate a change. Fisher started a petition last week, called “Let’s build a Dog Park!” on The Petition Site, which already has nearly 100 signatures.
