Senate Approves Vogel Bill, Other “Farming First” Measures

The Senate approved a “Farming First” legislative package this week that will help promote and support Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry, according to Senate Agriculture & Rural Affairs Committee Chairman Senator Elder Vogel (R-47). The package, which includes a bill sponsored by Senator Vogel to help new farmers get started in the industry, now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration. “These bills are key parts of our effort to help maintain the viability and profitability of Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry now and for years to come,” said Senator Vogel, who operates a family farm in Beaver County that was established in…

EC Historical Society Scholarship Winners Announced

The Ellwood City Area Historical Society will meet Monday, May 13 at 7:00 pm. Two scholarships of $1,500.00 each will be given at this meeting.  Two high school senior graduating students, that will further their education, will be the recipients.  Lincoln High School Gina Lynn DiCarlo and Riverside High School senior Isabella Marie Pansera will receive these awards. These students have been selected by the History Scholarship Committee; Mary May, Kay Houk, and Barbara Mastropietro. PHOTOS: Late Rally Spoils Softball Senior Night

After trailing for much of the game, a four-run rally by Ellwood City was later outdone by a 5-run final frame by Neshannock leading to a 10-7 road victory for the Lancers at Stiefel Park on Wednesday. The Wolverines rallied in the fifth inning and laid claim to a two-run cushion entering the seventh inning, but Neshannock plated two runs to tie the game and later in the inning saw Jesse Fehrs double home the go-ahead run. Panthers Take Third Consecutive WPIAL Track & Field Championship

“Trip, Trip, Triple!” For local sports fans, it is the call of legendary Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown, but on Monday, it could be used as a rally cry for the Riverside Panthers boys track team as they collected their third consecutive WPIAL Class-AA Championship – a three-peat. The team beat Shenango, 98-52, South Park, 107-43, and Waynesburg, 90-60 at Peters Township High School on Monday, earning uncontested points in their twelve event wins. Riverside’s promenade is scheduled for 6:30 pm on Friday, May 10. Students will arrive at the high school cafeteria by 5:30, where formal photos can be taken. Promenade in the gym begins at 6:20, where seating is free. At 6:30, the promenade will begin in the high school auditorium, where seats are $5.00. The theme for prom is Midnight in Manhattan. Junior High Softball Team Defeats Mohawk; Record Improves To 11-2

The Lady Wolverines put together another solid team effort and defeated Mohawk on Tuesday afternoon at Stiefel Park by a score of 13-3.  The game was shortened to 5 innings due to the mercy rule. Mohawk jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first only to see the Wolverines tie it up in the bottom of the inning.  Nardone led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Keira Rozanski.  A wild pitch would score Nardone as Rozanski advanced to third. Ellwood City Varsity Softball Mercies New Castle 11-0; Record improves to 11-5 In a game that featured two playoff-bound teams, The Lady Wolverines came away with a convincing win on Tuesday afternoon at Stiefel Park. Ellwood City walked it off via mercy rule in the fifth inning with an 11-0 victory. Winning pitcher Angelina Nardone twirled a gem in the circle with an efficient 5 innings of work. Bernstine Introduces Bill to Eliminate Concealed Carry Permit Requirement in PA

HARRISBURG – Coinciding with a Second Amendment rights rally held today in Harrisburg, Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) unveiled “constitutional carry” legislation, which would no longer require law-abiding citizens to obtain a license to carry a concealed firearm in Pennsylvania. “If a citizen passes a criminal background check, it is patently unjust and unconstitutional to add layers of bureaucratic regulations on those who are least likely to commit a crime,” said Bernstine, a vocal pro-Second Amendment lawmaker. “The current process is a duplicative abuse of the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun owners.” Bernstine’s bill would make available an optional concealed carry…

$4,357 Raised for Fireworks; Still Time to Donate

Fireworks Fundraiser draws closer to $5,000 goal. “We’ve received many donations and t shirt orders from people in the community and some people who don’t even live here,” said Eric Rayner, organizer of the fundraiser. “I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of such an amazing community.” As of May 6, $4,357 has been raised toward the $5,000 goal. The most recent donation was made by Bud Mazzant in combination with Berkshire Hathaway of Cranberry. They donated $500.
