This year, Trick or Treat featured a special guest: 8-year old Kyree Beachem, who has Hirschsprung’s disease, also known as short gut disease, which affects the intestinal tract. [Statements, opinion, and views expressed in this column are those of the author named and are not necessarily those of the EllwoodCity.org and Thought Process Enterprises team.] The day of the May primary elections, I wrote a column on why voting in local elections is important. The same principals hold true for today’s general election. It’s an off-year election. There are no state or Federal positions for us Pennsylvanians to vote for. While it may make today’s election less exciting, it doesn’t make it less important locally. There are several contested local positions such as county commissioners, judges, and borough…

From 2012: Mary Black: Fact, Fiction, or both?

Halloween is a time of year when ghost stories, folklores, and other scary tales begin to surface. In and around Lawrence County, one story seems to never lose its fascination. Mary Black, an alleged witch in Lawrence County during the 1800s, has been the antagonist of countless folklores since the 1950s. Her life, and the stories that accompany it, is constantly debated – but, is it fact, fiction, or perhaps a little of both. The answer is a little of both. Mary Johnson Black was born in 1801 in Ireland, married Andrew Black, and immigrated to western Pa. around 1832….
