Junior High Softball Team Defeats Mohawk; Record Improves To 11-2

The Lady Wolverines put together another solid team effort and defeated Mohawk on Tuesday afternoon at Stiefel Park by a score of 13-3.  The game was shortened to 5 innings due to the mercy rule.

Mohawk jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first only to see the Wolverines tie it up in the bottom of the inning.  Nardone led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Keira Rozanski.  A wild pitch would score Nardone as Rozanski advanced to third. Aliya Garroway brought in Rozanski with a sacrifice fly into right field.

The second inning would see Ellwood City increase their lead to 7-2 with a five spot.  Trinity Arlet laced a one-out single into right center field.  She moved to third on a single into left by Chloe Duncan and would score on a single to center by Ellie Kalantzis. Duncan would score on back to back wild pitches while  Nardone brought Kanlantzis in with her second double on the day.  Nardone scored on a grounder by Rozanski and Garroway plated Rozanski with a one-bounce double off of the wall in left center.

Mohawk added another run in the third but Ellwood City matched it in the home half inning.  Maddie Hicks walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a dropped third strike to Kaylani Leos.

The Wolverines made it 11-3 in the 4th with three more tallies.  Nardone reached first with a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Rozanski.  Garroway cleared the bases with a line shot off of the wall in right-center field.  Garroway would score on back to back wild pitches.

Ellwood City ended it in the fifth with two more runs.  Four straight walks to Joy Hudspath, Nardone, Rozanski, and Garroway brought in the first run and Nardone sent the Wolverine fans home happy as she scored on a wild pitch.

Nardone got the win in the circle as she scattered 8 hits over 5 innings of work.  She fanned 9 and did not issue a walk.  The feisty right-hander has now gone 12 innings without issuing a free pass.

Defensively, the young ladies were once again on point as they committed just 1 error.  Wehman made a nice running grab in right field to end the 4th and Garroway gunned down a baserunner at third attempting to steal.  Left fielder Leos, shortstop Hicks, and catcher Garroway made the play of the day as they combined on a nifty relay to cut down a runner at the plate to end the third inning.

The Lady Wolverines will look for win number 12 on Thursday as they travel to Neshannock to finish the season with the Lancers.  First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
