Koppel Bridge Replacement Project On Target, Detour Scheduled This Summer

According to PENNDOT Press Officer Steve Cowan, the $27.58 million dollar Koppel Bridge replacement project is progressing well. “Crews have one half of the deck rebar tied and are working on the other half of the bridge,” said Cowan via email. “Deck placement work should begin in early May.” An approximate three-month closure of both bridges and detour will occur from the late summer through the fall of 2019 when the new bridge and roadway will open. “Depending on several factors, the contractor is anticipating the detour to begin between July 17th and July 31st,” said Cowan. National Day Of Prayer Planned At Community Plaza

There will be a National Day of Prayer event held at the Ellwood City Community Plaza on Lawrence Avenue. The event will start at 11:45 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Badlands (the old 5th Street Diner) 225 Fifth St. There will be a complimentary Luncheon to follow at the Bandlands. This luncheon is co-sponsored by Ellport and Moravia Presbyterian Churches. Music will be provided by the Sisters of the Holy Transfiguration Monastery. World War II Pearl Harbor Survivor Turns 101

Happy (early) Birthday to Ellwood City’s Joseph Michael Gasper, who is turning 101 on Tuesday, April 23. He is our area’s last World War II Pearl Harbor Survivor. Gasper, who has lived in Ellwood City ever since he was discharged from the Army in 1945, is still very sharp and enjoys talking with his friends and family. Last year he was feted to a grand centenarian birthday party that included a gun salute from the Veterans Guard. He received dozens of cards from all over the world and birthday greetings from television and other entertainment stars. This year will be…

Library Activities For The Week Of April 22

The Ellwood City Area Public Library offers a variety of weekly activities. Information is available by calling the library at 724-758-6458. Activities taking place this week include WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24 10:00 a.m. – “Coloring for Adults,” a weekly program that is free and open to the public. Lady Wolverines Easily Dispatch Hopewell

The Ellwood City Wolverines varsity softball team easily dispatched Hopewell 11-1 on Thursday afternoon at Steifel Park. The Wolverines tallied five runs in the third inning to blow the game open after being staked to a one-run lead in the first inning. Angie Nardone, Mollie Street, and Kali Barnett all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the third. “Ringing in the new year” refers to the old tradition of celebrating beginnings and endings with bells. Early Lead For Wolverine Baseball Sets Stage For Victory

The Ellwood City Wolverines boys grabbed an early lead on its way to a 6-5 victory over North Catholic at home on Wednesday. The Wolverines scored three runs in the bottom of the first frame, aided by an RBI double by senior Ricky Pitrelli and a passed ball by North Catholic catcher in the frame. Pitrelli smacked two doubles (2-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 runs scored) in the contest and was one of two Wolverines to collect two hits on the day, joining fellow senior Brady Welsh (2-3, 2 runs scored) with multiple hits for the victors. Pine Valley Ride For Hope

The Pine Valley Ride for Hope will be hosting its 6th annual event this year on Saturday, June 22, rain or shine. If there happens to be rain, there will be an alternative route, that is shorter, taken. This year, it will be hosted by the New Castle Harley Davidson dealership located on 4655 US 422. Primary Election Voting Information

There are two locations available to be used for voting in the Primary Elections for Franklin Township. Voting will be on Tuesday, May 21 from 7:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M.
