Library Activities For The Week Of January 14

The Ellwood City Area Public Library offers a variety of weekly activities. Information is available by calling the library at 724-758-6458. Activities taking place this week include: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16 10:00 a.m. – “Coloring for Adults,” a weekly program that is free and open to the public. 3rd Annual Winter Wine & Brew Fest Announced

Ellwood City Revitalization presents the 3rd Annual Winter Wine and Brew Fest on Saturday, January 26, 2019. The event, scheduled from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, will take place at the Ellwood City Sons of Italy. Admission includes beer and wine tasting, entertainment, DJ, raffles, catered food, and a Chinese Auction.  Tickets are $25.00/person in advance and $30.00/person at the door. Lincoln High School Alumni Benefit Concert

On Saturday, May 11, the Lincoln High School Concert Choir will be celebrating their 75th Anniversary. In honor of this milestone, the choir will be putting on an Alumni Benefit Concert. Any and all proceeds will benefit the Cindy Pertile Scholarship Fund. This fun will provide two types of scholarships annually. One scholarship goes towards the annual Concert Choir trip and the other goes towards a graduating member of the LHS music department to help further their education after high school. Lady Wolverines Defend Home Court, Beat Beaver Falls

The Ellwood City Lady Wolverines defended home court Monday night in a backyard battle with neighboring Beaver Falls, defeating the Tigers 53-48.  Ellwood City used points from distance in pivotal third quarter and later at the free throw line to secure the section win. Three out of six player were in double figures including senior Isabella Roth with a team-high 15 points (four 3-pointers; 3-8 from the line). VIDEO: Lawmaker Calls For Investigation Into Ellwood Medical Center

Employees are still on the job, keeping the Ellwood City Medical Center open and safe, but without pay.  This may change as state and Lawrence County lawmakers are now calling for an investigation into the medical center. Last week, employees finally received good checks owed before Christmas – two weeks late – amid a series of recently reported payroll problems. According to a KDKA report, services have been dropped and departments have been closed. The century old medical center has gone from around 400 people to about 190. Wolverines Notch A Win Against Mohawk Area

Steve Antuono scored a game-high 21 points to lead Ellwood City to a 51-45 victory over Mohawk Area on Saturday. The Wolverines (4-6 overall) ran away with an early lead after a 15-point second quarter, running up the lead to 27-18 by halftime. Antuono collected three 3-pointers on his way to high game-high point total (6-15 overall, 3-6 3-pointers). He also shot well from the line, making 86% (6-for-7) of free throws attempted. Alberts, Walley Collect MAC Wrestling Championships

Wolverine wrestlers Jake Alberts and Austin Walley collected victories and championships on Saturday at the Ed Driscoll MAC tournament at Freedom High School. Walley was also voted Most Outstanding Wrestler in the 16-team tournament. In the 120 pound Championship Jake Alberts defeated Anthony Maiure, Mars, 14-7 while Austin Walley defeated Bryson Miller, of Freedom, 3-2 in the 182 pound Championship.  Wolverine Donavin Chambers fell to Daniel Yetsick, of Ambridge, in his third place 138-pound contest, finishing fourth. A KDKA-TV news van was parked just outside the Ellwood City Medical Center entrance this morning, with video equipment staging what could be another news update on the status of what has become regional news this week. Multiple Pittsburgh-based media sources have reported on the small, financially struggling western Pennsylvania hospital that has delayed paying its workers and now the works may find themselves without health insurance. According to KDKA report, United Healthcare has stated it is cancelling the hospital’s health insurance, at least temporarily, because of unpaid bills. Monday Night Cornhole League Set To Begin in January

The Western Pennsylvania Cornhole Association will begin a Monday night Cornhole League. For the next 10 weeks, players of all skill levels are invited to the Chewton Polish Club where at 7:00 p.m. players will participate in a blind draw for their partners and proceed to participate in the tournament. Due to the tournament being held in a club, participants must be 21 and older. The pairs will then compete in a double elimination tournament with standard rules and be guaranteed a minimum of two matches each week of the season.  At the end of the tournament, each team partner will be…
