Panthers, Lady Wolverines Both Victorious In WPIAL Opening Rounds

The Riverside Panthers baseball team and the Ellwood City Wolverines softball team each earned opening round victories Tuesday. #5 seeded Riverside knocked off Chartiers-Houston in the Class 2A first round while the #4 seed Wolverines defeated Beaver Falls in the WPIAL Class 3A softball playoffs first round. Riverside Boys Track & Field Finishes 2nd Overall In WPIAL Team Championships

A fifth straight WPIAL Championship eluded Riverside on Wednesday as the Panthers boys track and field team finished a close second place in the 2022 WPIAL Class 2A Team Championships at Peters Township High School. The Panthers fell to Shenango after nipping Greensburg Central Catholic, 79-71, and defeating South Park 101.50-48.50 Shenango clinched its first ever title by winning the 1,600-meter relay to edge Riverside. Ellwood City Community Health Foundation Grants Money to Ellwood City Fire Department

The old Hospital Foundation, now known as The Ellwood City Community Health Association, has donated $57,772.10 to the Ellwood City Volunteer Fire Department to assist with equipment for the QRS (Quick Response Service). The fire department responds to medical emergencies in the borough and stabilizes patients until an EMS unit can get on scene. When the former Ellwood City Hospital was purchased by Americore Holdings in 2017 it became a for-profit entity therefore they were not able to donate money to them any longer, and from 2017-2020 the foundation went through the process to become a separate non-profit entity. Four Lincoln High School lettermen will be continuing their athletic careers at Westminster College this fall. The four seniors recently signing athletic letters of intent, according to John Sovich, Lincoln Senior High School principal, and Curt Agostinelli, Ellwood City’s athletic director, are Stephen Antuono, Alyssa Jeffcoat, Angelina Nardone, and Kayla Servick. SPORTS: Panthers Drop Two To Shenango; Wolverines Defeat Western Beaver; JH Softball Wins

The Panthers boys baseball team met the Shenango Wildcats this week for a crucial home-and-home series to vie for section championship rights. Riverside came up on the short end of both games, falling twice in one-run defeats. On Monday, Riverside battled the Wildcats into an extra-innings affair before a timely squeeze bunt by Wildcats’ Braden Ziegler in the ninth inning scored the game-winning run for the 2-1 a Shenango victory. Dozens of different careers were on display at North Side Primary last week as part of Parent Career Day on May 5th. School to work director, principal and 28 different careers were on display for 5, 6, 7 and 8-year-olds. Baby cows, goats, military, tow truck, engineers, EC Forge, EC Fire, Chippewa PD, Vinny’s, a welder….to name a few! North Side Primary School is a K-2 building in the Ellwood City Area School District. Mr. Dan Parson is Elementary Principal/Federal Programs Coordinator.
