The Ellwood City boys tennis team has qualified for the WPIAL Playoffs for the first time since 2009.
The team will await playoff pairings for the WPIAL Class 2A team playoff set to take place May 6th at the Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College.
“We are excited about the playoffs,” says head coach John DiBuono. “We play 5 matches and you need to win 3 to win the overall match. Different players have stepped up at different times to get the win.”
The team completed multiple trainings at the Ellwood Area Family Center during the cold and rainy days which gave the players time to develop their hitting skills according to DiBuono.
The team will await its playoff match-up and has a couple exhibition matches to prepare for our playoff opponent.
“We know that whoever our opponent is going to be it will not be an easy task,” adds the head coach.
The team is led by singles players Porter Nash who picked up a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory over his Knoch opponent on Wednesday. The doubles duo of Christian DiBuono & Will Elder picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory on Wednesday but the Wolverines were defeated 3-2 in the match-up versus Knoch.
Ellwood City (3-4 Overall, 3-3 Section 2A-4) will next face Butler on Friday afternoon.
Quinn Smith, Isaac Smith, Dominic DiBuono, Devin Thompson and Adrian Alvarez round out the Wolverines who may get looks in the WPIAL Class 2A playoff match-up.
“Part of the excitement and goal of any sport is to make the playoffs, and we are excited for the opportunity,” concludes DiBuono. “It has definitely been a team effort this season.”
