Panthers, Lady Wolverines Both Looking To Advance In WPIAL Playoffs Thursday

Two local high school teams will continue their championship quests in their respective WPIAL playoff games Thursday evening.

The Riverside boys soccer team marched onto the second round of the Class 1A WPIAL Playoffs with a 2-0 victory Monday night over Carlynton. The Panthers (11-2-1 overall) are set to face off against Avonworth Thursday evening at Ambridge with a 6:30 game time.  Avonworth defeated Mohawk 4-0 in their opening round contest.

Alex Nour and Jesse Young, who both collected goals in the first round victory, will look again to lead the Panthers offense.  A victory Thursday would place Riverside in the semifinals on Monday, October 29 versus the winner of the Sewickley Academy/Springdale contest at a site yet to be determined.

The Ellwood City girls volleyball team collected a convincing victory in their Class 2A WPIAL opening game, defeating Beth Center in straight sets Tuesday evening at OLSH.  Danielle McCowin and Natalia Greco both collected three aces, Avory Elchison finished with six kills, and Saylee Grinnen collected four blocks. Mia DeCaria finished with 15 digs and 20 assists for the Wolverines.

The victory places the Lady Wolverines (10-3 overall) in an opening round contest versus Serra Catholic.  Ellwood City will have to travel to McKeesport and, more than likely, play the underdog roll against the undefeated, Section-4 champion Lady Eagles.  The game will take place Thursday evening at 7:30pm at Serra Catholic.

Knocking off an undefeated section leader would be nothing new for the Lady Wolverines as team dispatched previously undefeated Neshannock earlier this month.  A victory over Serra Catholic Thursday could set up a rematch with the Lancers next Tuesday, October 30 at a site yet to be determined.
