Hogue Hauls In Two, Wolverines Defeat Freedom 28-14

Dom Hogue hauled in two lengthy touchdown passes as part of an 8-catch, 169-yard receiving performance to help lead Ellwood City to a 28-14 victory over Freedom Friday night.

The Wolverines racked up 433 yards and 22 first downs offensively and did not have to punt in the section win.

Tyler Smiley finished 11-18 passing for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns in the air attack.

Smiley connected with Hogue on a 53-yard scoring strike midway through the first quarter to open up the scoring. Smiley also found DaiLonn Currie on a 19-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter to put Ellwood City ahead 14-7 at halftime.

Hogue corralled his second touchdown of the contest midway through the third quarter, a 36-yard scoring play to put Ellwood City ahead 21-7.

After the visiting Bulldogs narrowed the game to a one-score contest late, Richard Cureton plunged in from one yard out with four minutes remaining in regulation to give the Wolverines its 28-14 advantage.

Cureton rushed for 136 yards on 25 carries to lead the Wolverines rushing attack.

For Hogue, the all-around senior receiver now has 910 career receiving yards after his performance Friday, good for second all-time in Ellwood City football history according to ECWolverines.com. Hogue also returned one kickoff for 36 yards in the contest.

Defensively, Colton Gullo compiled a team-high nine tackles including three tackles for loss and 0.5 sack. Deklan O’Brien registered seven tackles and 1.5 sacks in the victory. Tyler Amicone collected an interception for the Wolverines.

Ellwood City (3-2, 2-0 Section 2A-2) will next travel to New Brighton on Friday. The Lions were on the wrong end of a 40-6 blowout Friday at the hands of Riverside.
