Wolverines Softball Stays Unbeaten, Defeats Shenango 4-1
The Lady Wolverines finished their pre section tune up with a record of 3-0 after a victory over Shenango Thursday evening at Steifel Park.
Junior Ellie Kalantzis staked the team to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as she tripled into the right field corner and scored on a wild pitch. Ellwood City expanded the lead to 3-0 in the third as Kiley Leviere reached on an error, stole second and scored on a double by Kalantzis. A walk to Aliya Garroway put runners on first and second. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Amber McQuistion plated Kalantzis with a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Wolverines added their fourth run with one out in the fifth thanks to Julia Nardone’s first home run of the season.
The Wildcats finally got on the board in the seventh with a walk, two groundouts and a single but it was too little, too late as the Wolverines stayed unbeaten on the young season.
Kalantzis led the offense with a double and triple. Nardone launched her bomb, and Garroway added a single. Freshman Mcquistion was strong once again notching her third victory as she twirled a three hitter over seven innings of work. She struck out 5 and walked 4.
First pitch on Monday in the section opener at Hopewell is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
Ellwood City Baseball Earns First Victory of Season
Ellwood City earned a much needed victory on Thursday, defeating New Brighton 12-2 in six innings in Ewing Park.
The Wolverines used a seven run second inning to jump ahead in the mercy rule victory.
Offensively, Nick Magnifico (3-4, 2 R) and Caleb Wilson (3-3, 2 R, 1 RBI) each collected three hits to lead the charge. Welsh (2-3, 3 RBIs) and Biskup (2-2, 1 R, 1 RBI) joined in with multi-hit efforts.
Andrews started on the rubber for Ellwood City, earning the victory with a five inning 3-hitter. Andrews struck out eight and did not allow an earned run.
Ellwood City (1-4 Overall) returns to action with a home-and-home series against Quaker Valley beginning Monday, April 3rd at Quaker Valley.
Fornataro Drives In Five As Riverside Wins Over Knoch
Bo Fornataro drove in five on two hits to lead Riverside past Knoch 20-2 in three innings on Wednesday.
Fornataro (2-3, 1 BB, 3 runs scored) drove in runs on a grand slam in the third and a single in the third.
Riverside secured the victory thanks to and 11-run outburst in the third inning. Fornataro, Seth Kristophel, Ashton Schlosser, Fornataro, and Hunter Garvin all drove in runs in the frame.
The Panthers racked up 13 hits in the game. Evan Burry, Mitch Garvin, Schlosser, and Fornataro all managed multiple hits for Riverside. Schlosser scored four runs.
Zach Hare led things off on the hill for Riverside. The pitcher went three innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out six.
Cody Stull toed the rubber for Knoch. Stull went two innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits and striking out four. Jacob Stallsmith and Lang entered the game from the bullpen, throwing two-thirds of an inning and one-third of an inning respectively.
Riverside (3-0 Overall) next hosts West Allegheny on Friday and Beaver Falls on Monday, April 3rd.
Rosenberger Tosses Three-Inning No-Hitter
Samantha Rosenberger threwa a three-inning no-hitter on Wednesday in a Lady Panthers’ victory over Freedom.
Rosenberger struck out seven Bulldogs while on the mound and also tripled and drove in a run offensively. Mia Williams had two hits and two RBIs for Riverside (2-0 Overall)
