Route 288 Realignment Project Ongoing, On Track For Completion As Scheduled

Barring any unforeseen field issues, the realignment and construction of Route 288 near the Zelienople Airport in on track for completion as scheduled.

The roadway is currently closed and under detour as part of a 102-day closure for the realignment project.

According to PENNDOT spokesperson Steve Cowan, the contractor anticipates completing the work within the contract parameters.

Joe Neubert, project manager for Independence Excavating, announced the parameters in July, with the anticipated re-opening date of on or before October 28, 2021

“As of [Tuesday], all mass excavation activities are complete,” says Cowan. “Concrete pipe work is finished on Route 288 and the contractor is beginning to place concrete pipe along Lake Road.”

Cowan adds that sub-base placement work will begin Thursday on Route 288 and then Lake Road (once the pipe installation is complete).  After the sub-base work is finished, the contractor will install pavement base drains.

“Paving is tentatively scheduled for early to mid-October, followed by guiderail installation, line painting, sign installation and seeding,” says Cowan.

The SR 288 Relocation project is located just Northwest of Zelienople adjacent to the Zelienople Municipal Airport. The project entails a complete re-construction and re-alignment of a section of SR 288 (Zelienople Road) and SR 1010 (Lake Road) to facilitate the expansion and upgrade of the airport runway. The new alignment will eliminate the existing reverse curve condition on SR 288, widen SR 1010 and improve the stopping sight distance at the intersection between the two roads. During construction, a new storm sewer system will be installed along with all new asphalt, guiderail, pavement markings and signage.
