The SR 288 Relocation project is located just Northwest of Zelienople adjacent to the Zelienople Municipal Airport. The project entails a complete re-construction and re-alignment of a section of SR 288 (Zelienople Road) and SR 1010 (Lake Road) to facilitate the expansion and upgrade of the airport runway. The new alignment will eliminate the existing reverse curve condition on SR 288, widen SR 1010 and improve the stopping sight distance at the intersection between the two roads. During construction, a new storm sewer system will be installed along with all new asphalt, guiderail, pavement markings and signage.
In December of 2020 theories and rumors would have drivers believe that construction project is to expand the airport runway for FedEx and UPS type planes for their nearby fulfillment centers, but Airport Manager, David Holman said that’s simply not true.
Construction is set to commence in early July. Work will be performed under a full closure of both SR 288 and SR 1010. A truck and car detour will be implemented for these roadways and will commence on July 19, 2021. 102 calendar days are planned for construction once the roadways are closed.
