Two Ellwood City teams collected victories Tuesday afternoon with the Ellwood City Softball team defeating Beaver Falls 10-0 and the Wolverine Baseball team defeating Mohawk 7-1. The Ellwood City Junior High Softball team fell to Laurel, but finished their regular season play with a 7-2 record.
Ellwood City Lady Wolverines Shut Down Beaver Falls
The Wolverines traveled to Beaver Falls on Tuesday and returned with a 10-0 victory. The Mercy Rule ended the contest after 5 innings.
Ellwood City started quickly as they plated three runs in the first.
Kyla Servick and Aliya Garroway walked and moved to second and third on a double steal. Angie Nardone drove them home with a single to center field. Makinley Magill moved Nardone to second with a sharp single to left. Back to back walks to Julia Nardone and Katelyn Wehman scored Angie Nardone with the third run.
Ellwood City stretched the lead to 5-0 in the second inning. Garroway was hit by a pitch and Angie Nardone walked to set the stage for Mollie Street. She promptly launched a 2-run double into the left center field gap to make it 5-0. The Wolverines made it 7-0 in the third. Wehman singled up the middle with one out and moved to second on a walk to Servick. Garroway plated Wehman with a double to right center as Servick moved over to third. Servick then scored on a passed ball. Ellwood City scored once in the fourth to go up 8-0.
Servick led off the 5th with an infield single and Maria Ioanilli put the icing on the cake with a two run bomb over the 220-ft sign in left center to close out the scoring.
Eight players combined for nine hits on the day. Angie Nardone led the way with two singles. Ioanilli homered while Street, Garroway, and Julia Nardone doubled. Servick, Magill, and Wehman added singles.
Julia Nardone got win number 11 as she twirled a 3 hitter. Nardone struck out 8 and did not issue a free pass. The defense played error free ball behind her.
The Wolverines, now 11-3 on the year and 6-3 in the section, will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday with Senior Night versus South Park. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
Junior High Softball Falls to Laurel, Finishes Season 7-2
The Ellwood City JH Softball team let a late lead slip away, falling 9-7 Tuesday afternoon at Laurel.
The Wolverines scored three runs in the second and third innings and led by as much as a 7-2 count before the host Spartans came storming back for the come-from-behind victory.
Laurel scored three runs in the home half of the fifth inning and then four more runs in the sixth inning to rally.
For the Wolverine offense, six players collected hits in the contest with LeViere (1 2b) and Folino (2 RBIs) both collecting two hits to lead the charge.
McQuistion started for Ellwood City, lasting five innings and giving up five runs while striking out nine batters in defeat. Bogacki pitched one inning of relief, surrendering only one earned run while striking out four batters.
The Junior High team finished its season with an outstanding 7-2 record.
Runs Keep Coming As Ellwood City Defeats Mohawk Area
A run here and a run there helped propel Ellwood City to a big win over Mohawk Area on Tuesday, 7-1.
After allowing the game’s first run, the visiting Wolverines scored in four consecutive innings to pull away to its victory.
In the top of the third inning, Ellwood City Wolverines tied things up at one. when an error scored one run for Ellwood City. The Wolverines then pulled away for good with two runs in the fourth inning. Nick Magnifico singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run, as part of his three-hit afternoon (3-5, 1R, 1 RBI)
Ryan Gibbons (4-2) was the winning pitcher for Ellwood City, lasting six innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out six. Joseph Roth threw a scoreless inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Ellwood City racked up eight hits in the game. Magnifico, Sammy DiCaprio, and James Meehan each racked up multiple hits. Ellwood City tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Meehan led the way with three.
Ellwood City finishes the season 9-11 (7-3 section) and earned a second place finish in Class-3A Section 1 play.
