LHS Class of ’57 Awards Two Scholarships

Two Lincoln High School students received scholarships from the Lincoln High School Class of 1957.

Hannah Rose Keally is this year’s recipient of the $5,000 scholarship given by the Lincoln High School Class of 1957 while Levi Alexander Smith received the $500 best essay award from the Class of ’57.

Hannah is majoring in fashion design in the College of Arts at Kent State University which gave her a president’s achievement award and an honors distinction award. Her goals include designing clothes and starting her own brand of clothing. Daughter of Frank and Katy Keally, Nannah was only 6 years old when her mother taught her to sew. They still learn new fashion design techniques together.

Hannah is salutatorian of the 2020 Class at Lincoln where she was president of National Honor Society, was a cheerleader and was involved in French Club, peer leadership SAVE, caring team, Art Club and screen printing club.

A Lions Club student of the month, she was in the gifted program, took honors and AP courses, attained high honor roll and had perfect attendance. In their letters of recommendation teachers described Hannah as an excellent student, motivated and a leader in the classroom with a strong desire to learn.

Hannah was a dance teacher at Studio P and work at coffee shops.

Levi is continuing his education, majoring in accounting, at Drexel University in Philadelphia which awarded him a Founder’s Scholarship. He plans to attend five years, earning a BS in business administration and a master’s of science in accounting. His goal is to become licensed as a certified professional accountant. He also wants to run for a public office.

One of six children of Doug and Jo Ann Smith, Levi was valedictorian of the 2020 Class at LHS where he attained high honor roll seven semesters, was in the gifted program and Presidential Education Awards program and received the American Legion award and two high school leadership awards.

In his essay, he detailed his community involvement including the 2019 Carpenters Project and his may years as a Boy Scout. His Eagle Scout project was constructing a pavilion as an outdoor classroom at Perry Elementary School at a cost of $9,000 which he raised through phone calls and emails to various businesses and area residents.

Last summer Levi was involved in football practice, soccer conditioning and marching band camp while working part-time and doing volunteer work. In the spring he was on the track and field team. He was junior class treasurer, band librarian, and section leader and vice president of German Club. He was also on the KDKA Hometown High-Q quiz show.

Levi also belonged to concert band, jazz ensemble, Lawrence County all-start band, History Club, stage crew and Culture club, was a tutor and did morning announcements.

Since 2009 the ’57 Class has given over $70,000 to Lincoln graduates. At its 50th anniversary reunion in July 2007, the class supported James Ammeen, class vice president, in his plans to start a scholarship  fund. In less than two years class members donated $105,000 to start the fund, which is administered by the Beaver County Foundation.

The scholarship fund is supported by donations, including those from the ’57 graduates who have pledged $57 per year. Individuals and groups may make contributions by mailing checks, with a notation of EC ’57 scholarship, to the Beaver County Foundation, Box 569, Beaver, PA 15009. All donations are tax deductible.
