Route 288 Bridge Replacement Project Progress

With many focused on the pending status and re-opening of the Koppel Bridge, another local bridge replacement is taking place in Wayne Township and will have forthcoming lane restrictions and brief detour later this month.

According to PennDOT Press Officer Steve Cowan, the ongoing replacement project will tentatively have single-lane alternating traffic controlled by a temporary signal that will occur from October 14 through October 25.  Full closure for paving work will result in a detour that will occur from Friday, October 25 through Monday morning, October 28.

“Once the weekend closure is over, eastbound traffic from Wampum to Ellwood City will travel over the old structure and westbound traffic will travel over the new structure,” Cowan concluded.

The Route 288 Wampum Avenue Bridge Replacement is a $10.51 million project between Mason Street and Oswald Street in Wayne Township. The project includes a full replacement of the existing bridge and other miscellaneous construction improvements, as well as, a roadway reconfiguration at the intersection of Wampum Road and Oswald Street.

The shortened period of closure comes as an update to a previously reported 12-day closure.

According to a PennDOT release, during the winter of 2019-2020, both the existing and newly constructed bridges will remain open and carry a single-lane of traffic in one direction each.
