Ellwood City Lions Club “Follow My Leader Essay Contest”

The Ellwood City Lions Club is pleased to announce the winners of its 5th annual “Follow My Leader Essay Contest.” The contest gave all fifth graders at Hartman Elementary School a chance to read the book Follow My Leader by James B. Garfield.

In the book, 11-year-old Jimmy Carter is forced to learn a whole new way of life after he is accidentally blinded by a firecracker. Jimmy is paired with, and trained to use, a guide dog named Leader. The book shows how the boy’s accident and resulting blindness impacts the lives of Jimmy, his family and his friends.

The 2018 winners were honored at the Ellwood City Lions Club’s May 8 meeting.

Kailyn Hamilton took first place in this year’s contest, Ava Robbins was awarded second place, and Jada Shelby finished in third place.

The winners each received $25 gift cards from McDonald’s and certificates of achievement from the Lions Club. The first-place and second-place winners also each received an autographed picture of Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.
