Riverside Downs Ellwood CIty 9-2 In RivEll Series Opener

Soggy and cold conditions met the Ellwood City and Riverside baseballs teams as they squared off in Ewing Park Monday afternoon in the first game of a home-and-home series this week. The visiting Panthers came out ahead on Monday, winning comfortably 9-2 behind a balanced offensive attack, a two run bomb, and stout pitching. Riverside (1-0 Overall) used multi-hit games from four starters and impressive starting performance by pitcher Ronnie Harper to earn its season opening victory. Riv-Ell Series Kicks Off The Baseball Season For Riverside & Ellwood City

What better way to roll out the spring baseball season, than to have two rivals host a home-and-home series? The crosstown rivals, Ellwood City and Riverside, each will quickly get acquainted with one another beginning Monday, March 27th when the Wolverines will host the Panthers in Ewing Park to begin regular season section play. The teams will flip home fields as part of the mini, two-game tilt with Riverside holding home field on Tuesday, March 28th. Ellwood City Fall Baseball Teams Both Earn Playoff Appearances; JV Defeated In Championship

The Ellwood City High School baseball teams wrapped up their respective fall campaigns with a combined 23-7 record between varsity and junior varsity with playoff appearances obtained by each squad. The teams were compromised of 36 players ranging from 7th grade to 12th grade. Varsity finished 10-4 (2-1 in playoffs) and missed the championship game by one run tie-breaker while the Junior Varsity finished an impressive 13-3 regular season campaign (3-1 in playoffs) and reach the championship game, falling 12-8 to the Blackhawk Cougars. GOING, GOING, GONE: Biondi Wins Ellwood City Little League Tournament Home Run Derby

Ellwood City’s Gino Biondi won the 21st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Home Run Derby. Biondi belted nine home runs to win the competition. Liam Connelly of West View/Ross Township and Tim McElhaney tied for second place with six home runs. Cam Mills of Ellwood City and Kaden Troung of West View/Ross Township smacked five home runs. The competition included 32 contestants from the eight teams in the tournament. Laurel Shuts Out Ellwood City In 71st Little League Tournament

Laurel defeated Ellwood City, 10-0, in the nightcap Thursday in the 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament at Freidhoff Field. Braydon Faulkner rapped three singles with five RBI and was the winning pitcher with three hitless innings. Laurel opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Jack Brest led off with a double and Memphis McDonaugh followed with a single. Faulkner singled scoring Brest to give Laurel a 1-0 lead. Gino Biondi led Ellwood City to a 5-4 win over Shaler in the nightcap of the 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament on Tuesday night. The victory will advance Ellwood City to next play Laurel on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. On Tuesday, Biondi slashed an RBI-double in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie to give Ellwood City the winning margin. 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic Begins Monday

The 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic will begin on Monday, July 25 at Freidhoff Field in the Ewing Park Baseball Complex. The tournament, which began in 1952, is the second oldest Little League tournament in the nation next to the Little League World Series which celebrates its’ 75th tournament this season. Eight teams will compete for the title in the double-elimination tournament. The tournament field is as follows: Ellwood City, West View/Ross, New Castle, Shaler, Laurel, Neshannock, Central Valley and Shenango. Ominous skies surrounding Sanders Field Tuesday afternoon when the Ellwood City Wolverines were set to host Mohawk for the second game of their home-and-home series with the Warriors. The afternoon started with senior recognition for the five Wolverines seniors prior to first pitch, but the game was not able to be completed.
