Riverside Downs Ellwood CIty 9-2 In RivEll Series Opener

Soggy and cold conditions met the Ellwood City and Riverside baseballs teams as they squared off in Ewing Park Monday afternoon in the first game of a home-and-home series this week.

The visiting Panthers came out ahead on Monday, winning comfortably 9-2 behind a balanced offensive attack, a two run bomb, and stout pitching.

Riverside (1-0 Overall) used multi-hit games from four starters and impressive starting performance by pitcher Ronnie Harper to earn its season opening victory.

Harper, a Slippery Rock University commit, did not allow an earned run over six innings, striking out three and allowing only two hits.

The Panthers offense set the tone early with three runs in a second inning and used a two-run home run blast by left fielder Hunter Garvin in the third inning to race out to a 5-0 lead. Riverside put up four more runs in the fifth inning before the Wolverines could get on the scoreboard.

Hunter Garvin (2-3, HR, two RBIs), Mitch Garvin (2-4, two RBIs), Darren McDade (2-3, two 2Bs), and Sean Hayes (2-3, 2B, SB) powered the Panthers offense.

Nick Magnifico took the defeat for Ellwood City (0-3 Overall). Magnifico struck out three in his five innings. Jordan Keller and Chase Wilson scratched out the lone hits for the Wolverines offense that was able to work seven walks in the contest.

The teams will rematch quickly with game two of the mini series scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at Riverside High School.
