This past weekend, the Ellwood City varsity boys wrestling team began their 2018-2019 season at the 22-team Hickory Invitational. The wrestling team is lead by seniors Jake Alberts and Donavin Chambers, along with their teammates Austin Walley, Donavin Chambers and Zach Polojoic. At the weekend invitational, Walley took first place in his 182-pound class, collecting a 15-3 decision over Elijah Ayers (Coudersport) while Chambers placed second in his 138-pound final, falling 7-2 in the finals. Donavin Chambers took 2nd place (132 pounds) at the PIAA Class 2A Southwest Regional Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Chambers rattled off three straight wins, including a 1-0 decision over Chase Proudfit of Penn Cambria in the semifinal, but fell victim and dropped a 6-3 decision to Alex Miscovich of Mount Pleasant in the title match. Three Ellwood City Wolverine Wrestlers Placed in the WPIAL Championships this weekend.  The Championship finals featured 23 wrestlers currently ranked Top 25 in Pennsylvania. Austin Walley used a decision victory over Austin Mele, Burrell, 4-2, to take 3rd place in the 170-pound consolation match.  Walley had ousted Quaker Valley’s Keegan Forsythe in his opening round match, but fell in a decision to Jaden Detz, of Southmoreland, in the semifinals of the 170-pound division. Donavan Chambers also was victorious in his consolation bout with a 10-3 decision over Josh Agnew, Jefferson-Morgan.  Chambers wrapped up 5th place in the 132-pound consolation match….

Ellwood City finished their last match of the year last Friday with a 30-24 win against Fort Cherry.  Next Friday, February 16th the Wolverines will be traveling to Canon MacMillan to compete for the section and individual WPIAL Championships. Aided by six match victories, the Ellwood City Wolverines wrestling team defeated New Castle 42-17 Tuesday evening during senior night. Match victories by Jake Alberts, Tyler Baird, Donavan Chambers, Doug Balin, Braden Strohecker, and Austin Walley proved decisive in the Wolverines victory. Austin Walley placed 1st in the 170-pound class at MAC Wrestling Tournament held this weekend to lead an Ellwood City wrestling team that finished 7th out of 16 teams. Other wrestlers placing include, Donavin Chambers placed 3rd, Jake Alberts placed 3rd, Tyler Baird placed 4th, Doug Balin placed 6th, Braden Strohecker placed 7th, and Angelo Agostinelli placed 8th. Tyler Alberts is on the road to Hershey with a medal on his mind. The Ellwood City junior will be competing in the PIAA wrestling championships on Thursday through Saturday and in a way, he’s been preparing most of his life for this. Alberts started wrestling in first grade through clubs. In the Ellwood junior high wrestling program, he advanced to the state competitions. Last year, as a sophomore, Alberts advanced to states but lost the preliminary round. He won the first consolation match but lost the second. Although the winter sports season has largely concluded, local athletes are still experiencing the post-season in swimming and wrestling. Over the weekend, two Ellwood and five Riverside athletes qualified for the PIAA competition. Both schools are in Class AA.
