The Ellwood City Wrestling team took second place at the Southside Duals tournament on Saturday, Jan. 2. Ellwood went 3-2, defeating Ambridge, Highlands and Independence. The Ellwood City wrestling team defeated Central Valley 37 to 24 in an away match on Wednesday, Dec. 9 In the decisive matches, Sophomore Tyler Baird won a 10-2 decision over Michael Caponera, and junior Tyler Alberts defeated Derrick Knox 5-0. Nine out of the 14 matches were decided by forfeits, making the contested matches all the more important. Winter Sports Preview 1: Ellwood City Wrestling

As a sophomore, Tyler Albers won the wrestling MAC tournament, placed third in the WPIAL and advanced to the PIAA state tournament. This year, as a junior, he’s hoping to improve that performance. The Ellwood City Wolverine wrestlers had a fine individual showing at the Hampton Team Duels with 25 match wins. The competition, held at Hampton High School on Saturday, Dec. 5, pitched five teams against each other in a tournament series and inaugurates the varsity wrestling season. Ellwood City wrestling celebrated senior night on Friday, Feb. 6. Seniors David McCarthy, Jacob Mayle and Mike Sinclair were honored. The team had their last home match against Mars.
