Sophomore Braiden McClure finished runner-up in the 107-pound weight division at the District 7 AA Sectionals last weekend at Keystone Oaks High School. McClure opened up with a major decision victory before bowing out the in the finals to Angelo Boni of Central Valley. McClure now holds an individual match record of 22-7 this season. Two Ellwood City wrestlers have qualified for upcoming wrestling tournaments this weekend. Junior high wrestler Cheyenne Berglund (96 pounds) will compete in the 9th Annual PA Junior High State Championship Tournament in Johnstown, PA this weekend after a qualifying performance last weekend. “Cheyenne has grown over the year and is highly intelligent and is picking up more technique, she has had an excellent season.” says coach John Fleming. “She’s willing to add moves to her arsenal and I feel that will really help her growth in this sport.” For Berglund, this will be a second go-round at states as she…

Ellwood City junior high wrestlers Brayden McClure (87-pound class) and Cheyenne Berglund (94-pound class) each placed fourth for the Wolverines in a 23-team wrestling tournament held last weekend. The team competed in the Indiana (PA) Eagles/Good & Associates Tournament on Saturday, January 14th. McClure and Berglund each reached the 3rd place match in their respective weight class in the tournament. McClure finished with a 4-2 record while Berglund finished with a 2-2 record. Wolverine wrestler Ben Gallenz made it to the Championship Quarterfinals during day one matches Southmoreland Holiday Classic to help earn Ellwood City its 28th place finish in the two day wrestling tournament. The 139-pound Gallenz pinned Carl Raitano (Plum) at 1:57 in his opening round match-up and advanced to later earn a 9-1 decision victory over Keegan Young (Greensburg Salem) in Round 2 before falling in the Championship Quarterfinals.
