PHOTOS: EC Girls Cruise Past Riverside, EC Boys Knock Off Neshannock

The Ellwood City Girls Basketball team used an impressive 23-3 first quarter spurt to cruise to a 47-15 victory over rival Riverside on Tuesday night. Three Wolverines finished in double figures led by senior guard Kyla Servick who finished with a game-high 12 points. Saige Chambers (11 points) and Emily Sedgwick (10 points) joined Servick in double figures for an Ellwood City team (7-9 Overall, 4-5 Section 1-3A) that has now collected three consecutive victories. PHOTOS: Wolverines Race Past Rival Riverside, 60-45

Ellwood City used a decisive first quarter to race out to an early lead in its eventual 60-45 victory over rival Riverside Friday evening at Riverside High School. The Wolverines used 10 first quarter points by sophomore Joseph Roth to race out to a 19-4 advantage.  The 15 point cushion held through halftime as the teams played even through halftime with Ellwood City ahead 31-16 at the break. Jumpin’ Joe! – Roth Scores 35 Points, Wolverines Improve To 12-2

Ellwood City big man Joseph Roth showed his prowess on both ends of the court Tuesday night, collecting 35 points and hauling in 20 rebounds to lead the Wolverines to a 49-35 victory over section foe Laurel. After an uneventful first quarter, Roth heated up and scored 11 points in the second quarter that saw the host Wolverines pull away for a 19-9 halftime advantage. Splash Bros Lead Wolverines Over Lancers

“Splash Brothers” Alexander and Joseph Roth combined to score 43 points Friday night to power the visiting Wolverines to a 56-34 victory over Neshannock. In a rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class-3A playoff semifinal, Ellwood City led the wire to wire for the impressive road victory in the match-up of two loss section foes.  The Wolverines had previously upset the 2-seeded Lancers in last year’s WPIAL Championship run. Wolverines Cruise To Christmas Tournament Championship

Ellwood City traveled north for the Mercer Christmas Tournament and found no resistance in District 10 as the Wolverines earned the tournament championship Tuesday evening. The defending WPIAL Class-3A Champions defeated Saegertown 77-36 on Monday and then host Mercer 74-49 on Tuesday. The Splash Brothers, Alexander and Joseph Roth, each scored 47 points over the two-game tournament. Senior Alexander had a game-high 24 points Monday while sophomore Joseph scored a game-high 25 points Tuesday in the championship game. Ellwood City Basketball Teams Look To Build On Buzz; Boys Vie For WPIAL Repeat

A buzz was injected into the Ellwood City basketball program last year as the boys team rode the wave of a cinderella WPIAL Playoff run and captured the school’s first ever WPIAL Basketball Championship in March. Proclamation Presented To WPIAL Champion Boys Basketball Team

Mayor Anthony J. Court presented a proclamation to the Ellwood City Wolverines basketball team this week. The team captured the school’s first WPIAL Championship in the school’s history in March with its victory over South Allegheny. Wolverines To Host Brookville In PIAA Quarterfinals

The Ellwood City boys basketball team, fresh off their first ever WPIAL Championship, will now turn their focus to the PIAA Playoffs that begin this weekend. MARCH MADNESS: Ellwood City Ousts South Allegheny, Claims First Ever WPIAL Title

Led by the trio of juniors Alexander Roth and Steve Antuono, and freshman Joseph Roth, the Wolverines knocked off top seeded South Allegheny 53-50 Monday night to earn the WPIAL Class-3A Championship at North Allegheny. The championship is the first WPIAL championship for the basketball program after earning its first championship game berth since 1986.  This year’s run was special as the team won five games en route to the championship including victories over the #1, #2, #3 and #6 seeds along the way. Wire-To-Wire Winners, Ellwood City Advances to WPIAL Championship

Ellwood City led wire-to-wire, avenging two regular season losses, and upended 2-seed Neshannock 60-51 Thursday night to advance to the WPIAL Class-3A Championship game. Alexander Roth scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half, including nine – all free throws – in the final frame to help the Wolverines escape the de-facto road game at Neshannock.
