Wolverines Open Up Playoffs Against Summit Academy

Ellwood City opens up its WPIAL title defense Monday night against Summit Academy at Lincoln High School at 7:00 p.m. in the opening round of the 2022 WPIAL Class 3A Playoffs. Wolverines Earn Top Seed, Playoff Tickets Now On Sale

The “Path To The Pete” starts Monday for the Ellwood City boys basketball team as the WPIAL Class-3A Playoffs are set to begin. The Wolverines earned a #1 seed after its 20-2 regular season. The team went undefeated in section play. Ellwood City remained unbeaten in section play, one night after clinching an outright section championship, with a 65-52 victory over Beaver Falls on Tuesday. Senior Steve Antuono led the charge with a game-high 24 points (10-12 FTs, two 3-pointers, six assists, two steals) while two fellow seniors, Alexander Roth (14 points, four rebounds, four assists) and Peyton O’Brien (13 points, two blocks), joined him in double figures. Roth Nets 1,000th Career Point, Wolverines Clinch First-Ever Section Championship

Two records were set Tuesday night at Mohawk when the Ellwood City Wolverines defeated the host Warriors 57-31. First, in the second quarter, Alexander Roth connected on the first of his two free throw attempts to earn his 1,000th career point. The senior scored 19 of his team-high 20 points (two 3-pointers, four rebounds) in the first half to help the Wolverines gain a 36-14 halftime advantage. The Ellwood City Girls Basketball team used an impressive 23-3 first quarter spurt to cruise to a 47-15 victory over rival Riverside on Tuesday night. Three Wolverines finished in double figures led by senior guard Kyla Servick who finished with a game-high 12 points. Saige Chambers (11 points) and Emily Sedgwick (10 points) joined Servick in double figures for an Ellwood City team (7-9 Overall, 4-5 Section 1-3A) that has now collected three consecutive victories. Wolverines Cruise To Christmas Tournament Championship

Ellwood City traveled north for the Mercer Christmas Tournament and found no resistance in District 10 as the Wolverines earned the tournament championship Tuesday evening. The defending WPIAL Class-3A Champions defeated Saegertown 77-36 on Monday and then host Mercer 74-49 on Tuesday.
