The Ellwood City Girls Basketball team used an impressive 23-3 first quarter spurt to cruise to a 47-15 victory over rival Riverside on Tuesday night. Three Wolverines finished in double figures led by senior guard Kyla Servick who finished with a game-high 12 points. Saige Chambers (11 points) and Emily Sedgwick (10 points) joined Servick in double figures for an Ellwood City team (7-9 Overall, 4-5 Section 1-3A) that has now collected three consecutive victories. Ellwood City used a decisive first quarter to race out to an early lead in its eventual 60-45 victory over rival Riverside Friday evening at Riverside High School. Ellwood City traveled north for the Mercer Christmas Tournament and found no resistance in District 10 as the Wolverines earned the tournament championship Tuesday evening. The defending WPIAL Class-3A Champions defeated Saegertown 77-36 on Monday and then host Mercer 74-49 on Tuesday. The Ellwood City boys basketball team, fresh off their first ever WPIAL Championship, will now turn their focus to the PIAA Playoffs that begin this weekend. Led by the trio of juniors Alexander Roth and Steve Antuono, and freshman Joseph Roth, the Wolverines knocked off top seeded South Allegheny 53-50 Monday night to earn the WPIAL Class-3A Championship at North Allegheny.
