Ellwood City opens up its WPIAL title defense Monday night against Summit Academy at Lincoln High School at 7:00 p.m. in the opening round of the 2022 WPIAL Class 3A Playoffs. Two records were set Tuesday night at Mohawk when the Ellwood City Wolverines defeated the host Warriors 57-31. First, in the second quarter, Alexander Roth connected on the first of his two free throw attempts to earn his 1,000th career point. The senior scored 19 of his team-high 20 points (two 3-pointers, four rebounds) in the first half to help the Wolverines gain a 36-14 halftime advantage. Ellwood City big man Joseph Roth showed his prowess on both ends of the court Tuesday night, collecting 35 points and hauling in 20 rebounds to lead the Wolverines to a 49-35 victory over section foe Laurel. After an uneventful first quarter, Roth heated up and scored 11 points in the second quarter that saw the host Wolverines pull away for a 19-9 halftime advantage. “Splash Brothers” Alexander and Joseph Roth combined to score 43 points Friday night to power the visiting Wolverines to a 56-34 victory over Neshannock. In a rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class-3A playoff semifinal, Ellwood City led the wire to wire for the impressive road victory in the match-up of two loss section foes.  The Wolverines had previously upset the 2-seeded Lancers in last year’s WPIAL Championship run. Ellwood City traveled north for the Mercer Christmas Tournament and found no resistance in District 10 as the Wolverines earned the tournament championship Tuesday evening. The defending WPIAL Class-3A Champions defeated Saegertown 77-36 on Monday and then host Mercer 74-49 on Tuesday. The Splash Brothers, Alexander and Joseph Roth, each scored 47 points over the two-game tournament. Senior Alexander had a game-high 24 points Monday while sophomore Joseph scored a game-high 25 points Tuesday in the championship game.
