NORTH SEWICKLEY TWP. –The Ellwood City Wolves Club Den II, through their scholarship program, continues to honor the achievements of outstanding Lincoln and Riverside High School seniors by encouraging them to pursue their dreams through higher education. Joan M. Brommer, 70, of Meadville (formerly of New Castle) passed away Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Geauga Medical Center in Chardon, Ohio following an illness. Born December 29, 1946 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Margaret Jeanette Scott Porada. She was married on June 24, 1978 to Donald E. Brommer who passed away April 26, 2016. Joan enjoyed gardening and canning her vegetables. She also enjoyed camping and fishing. Her most cherished time was spent with her late husband and their family especially their grandchildren. Lieutenant Speaks About Importance of Drug Take-Back Programs

The Ellwood City Police Department is sponsoring a drug take-back program on Saturday, April 29 at the Ellwood City Municipal Building. Residents may use the opportunity to turn in unused or expired medication for safe disposal, which the Ellwood City Police Lieutenant says is a critical step towards improving the growing amount of drug addictions. “The importance of the program is that it takes away the ability to use prescription drugs from people who may be experimenting with them, especially the opioids,” Lt. Olga T. Port, 97 formerly of Division Avenue, Ellwood City passed away at the University Hospital, Bedford Ohio Medical Center on Thursday, April 13, 2017. Born in Ellwood City on November 14, 1919, Olga was the daughter of the late Pietro and Santina Nichanti Mariotti. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas D. Port on April 22, 2001. Woman Facing Charges of Child Endangerment After Injuring Infant

A resident of Freed’s Trailer Park in New Galilee, 24 year-old Courtney Marie Jeffries, will be facing charges of simple assault and endangering the welfare of children, proceeding an incident that occurred last month involving her three month old daughter. According to the criminal complaint, the daughter of Jeffries was taken to the Ellwood City Hospital with an injury to the child’s right arm. The infant was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh UPMC and a medical personnel at the facility examined the child and diagnosed her with a fracture on her upper arm. Mr. Robert Clark Nesbit, 72, of Ellwood City passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 in the Butler VA Medical Center from health issues that occurred due to his exposure to agent orange during the Vietnam War. Dr. Milton L. Caplan was born in 1915, son of the late Jacob L. Caplan and Gertrude Goldman Caplan, in Ellwood City, and lived in Ellwood most of his life, until  2003, at the age of 88, when he retired to West Palm Beach Florida.
