The Wolverines remain undefeated on the season and now have run their winning streak to 38 against WPIAL teams. Ellwood City will make a second straight trip to the title game and also has qualified for the state playoffs after its 3-1 victory over #4 Southmoreland (11-7 overall) Tuesday afternoon. Ellwood City Wolverines upset the number two seed, the Steel Valley Ironmen 7-2 in WPIAL quarterfinal baseball 3A action Monday afternoon at Burkett Complex in Robinson Township. Several local athletes qualified for states during the Track WPIAL Championships yesterday held at Baldwin High School. Riverside Qualifiers: Lance Fisher is the best in the WPIAL Class 2A in both discus and shot put. Calvin Wetzel took first in Boys 300 Meter Hurdles AA. Wolverine Softball/Baseball Teams Both Advance In WPIAL Playoffs

The defending WPIAL champion Ellwood City Wolverines softball team received an opening round scare Wednesday afternoon, but twice were able to erase multiple-run deficits to finally oust the pesky 8-seeded Burrell Bucs 6-5 in the WPIAL Class 3A softball quarterfinals Wednesday at North Allegheny. Burrell (8-8 overall) took a 2-0 lead in the fifth, backed by pitcher Brittany Dunn, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but the Lady Wolverines used a walk and a couple errors in their half of the inning to knot the game at two. After the conclusion of stellar regular seasons for two local sporting clubs, the WPIAL announced its Championship Brackets with no surprises to those who follow the programs – Ellwood City Wolverines softball (15-0 overall) and Riverside Panthers baseball (15-1 overall) teams received top seeds and byes in their respective Class-3A Championship brackets. Former Panther Standout Named GLIAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year

Tiffin University right-hander Michael Boswell finished his rookie campaign with five wins in 11 appearances, helping the Dragons post their best winning percentage in program history. For his efforts, Boswell was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Freshman Pitcher of the Year, the first time a Tiffin player has ever taken the award. Boswell finished second on the team in innings and wins, and averaged 8.02 strikeouts per nine innings. Riverside Track Wins WPIAL Championship

The Riverside track team doesn’t show any signs of slowing down – literally. The Riverside Boys Track and Field Team defeated three other finalists to become the winners of the WPIAL Team Track and Field Championships at Baldwin High School on Monday.  The victory is the fourth boys WPIAL team crown since 2007 Riverside picked up the title with wins against Derry Area, Shenango and Freeport.  Shenango beat out Derry for second-place due to an overall points tiebreaker. There was no shortage of action and a healthy dose of competitive hoops in the Ellwood City Adult Basketball League’s regular season finale Sunday at the Family Center. Channeling their inner Macho Man, Big Fun had their elbows ready for their long awaited rematch against Turncoats.
