Wolverines Advance To WPIAL Quarterfinals With Upset Victory Over Avonworth

Steve Antuono, Alexander Roth, and Joseph Roth provided a balanced scoring attack and Ellwood City used a strong performance in the fourth quarter to earn its 58-53 victory over Avonworth Thursday night at North Allegheny HS. The victory advanced the 11-seeded Wolverines (11-4 overall) into the quarterfinals of the Class-3A Playoffs. Riverside Swimming Looking To Make Splash at WPIAL Championships

The co-op swimming team consisting of Ellwood City and Riverside athletes is off to the WPIAL Championships this weekend carrying their third consecutive undefeated Class-AA section title with them. Class AA and Class AAA championship meets March 6-7 at Upper St. Clair High School. Local athletes set to compete include senior Graham Kralic (50 freestyle), sophomore Sam Kline (100 freestyle), freshman Joe Roth (100 backstroke), junior Alex Roth (100 freestyle), and freshman Ryan Turner (100 freestyle). Wampum Native Named River States Conference Athlete of the Year/Week

Carlow University freshman and Wampum native Keri Lechner was selected River States Conference Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and of the Week for her performance Feb. 15-21. “It honestly felt really amazing to be able to be named the women’s indoor track athlete of the year and week considering I’m a freshman,” Lechner said. “It’s sort of like a fever dream to me.” A Shenango class of 2020 graduate, Lechner was voted the conference’s outstanding track athlete of the year after starring at the RSC Indoor Track & Field Championships, where she won five events and competed in seven events…

PHOTOS: Ellwood City Sweeps Riverside In Doubleheader

The Ellwood City Wolverines girls and boys basketball teams each defeated the Panthers and swept the rivalry doubleheader Tuesday night at Riverside High School. The girls ran away with a 42-12 victory in the first game while the boys used a strong second half to collect its 80-53 victory in the second game of the evening. For the girls, the cousin duo of Junior Kyla Servick and Freshman Claire Noble combined for 30 points. Weisz Named ECASD Varsity Baseball Coach

Chris Weisz has been named the Ellwood City Area School District’s Boys Baseball Coach for the 2021 season. Weisz grew up in Ellwood City and still lives here with his wife, Gabriella, and their three sons Gavyn (9), Greyson (4), and Geno (1). He is no stranger to coaching as has coached both baseball and basketball. “I was the head varsity assistant coach at Shenango where we made 2 WPIAL Final Fours, 2 Sections Championships and in 2019 being ranked the number 1 team in the state. Antuono Scores 32, Wolverines Power Past Mohawk

Steve Antuono scored a game high 32 points to lead the Ellwood City Wolverines to its 78-45 romp over Mohawk Friday night. The junior connected on six 3-pointers, including four in the second half, to pace the Wolverines offensive attack.  Antuono scored 11 points in the fast paced first quarter which saw Ellwood City take an early 24-8 advantage. Second quarter contributions by senior Sam DiCaprio (8 points) and freshman Joey Roth (6 points) helped the offensive attack in putting Ellwood City comfortably ahead 45-30 at halftime. ROUNDBALL: Lady Wolverines Collect Two Victories

The Ellwood City Girls Basketball team has collected two impressive victories at home this week. On Monday, the Lady Wolverines secured a section win over the visiting Beaver Falls Tigers by a score of 48-44. Ellwood City was led by junior Kyla Servick who poured in 15 points. Senior Maria Ioanilli joined Servick in double-digits posting 12 points, including two clutch free throws at the end of the game. Venezie Sporting Goods & Apparel Announces 2021 Scholarships

Venezie Sporting Goods & Apparel has announced its annual scholarship opportunity for area students this year.  The scholarship, now in its third year, will be available to four local school districts. “We love our community and we love our students, and it is time we continue to recognize them for all their hard work inside and outside of the classroom,” said Vice President of Operations, Vanessa Venezie. Ellwood City Connects On 11 3-Pointers, Bounces Rival Riverside

Ellwood City was red hot from deep on Friday night, connecting on 11 3-pointers en route to its easy 71-33 victory over rival Riverside at Lincoln High School. The Wolverines scorched the nets for five first quarter three pointers with junior Steve Antuono nailing three triples as part of the Wolverine’s 24-9 first quarter advantage. Roth Scores 31, Ellwood City Defeats Rochester

Freshman Joseph Roth scored 31 points and Ellwood City used an impressive fourth quarter to pull away for a 61-50 non-section victory over Rochester Tuesday night. Ellwood City outscored the visiting Rams 19-3 in the fourth quarter after trailing by five points entering the final frame. Roth enjoyed an steady performance throughout the game, scoring six points in each of the first two quarters, eight points in the third quarter, and tallied 11 points in the final frame.  For Roth, it is his third consecutive 20+ point scoring effort for Ellwood City.
