PLEASE NOTE: WPIAL Championship Game is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2nd at 2:15 p.m. at California University of Pennsylvania There’s an age old adage in softball and baseball that states “Offense sells tickets, Pitching and Defense win Championships”. PHOTOS: 6th Grade Olympics

Ellwood City 6th grade students participated in their annual 6th grade Olympics this past Thursday May 20th at Helling Stadium in Ewing Park. The day started off with a parade of classes in the morning before the events began. The team names represented each of the students homerooms. The teams were as follows:  Agostinelli All Stars; Bing’s Bandits; Mrs.Cortez’s Charging Cheetahs; Morella’s Wolverines; Ott’s Bots ; The Rozanski Royals Morella’s Wolverines won the Tug Of War Championship.

Ellwood City Football Announces Youth Camp

The Ellwood City Varsity Wolverines football team will be hosting a youth football camp this summer. The camp will take place June 7th-9th from 4-6 p.m. This will be a free camp and it is open to children in grade 3rd-6th. The varsity coaches along with the senior players, will be coaching and overseeing the camp. This will be a non-contact football skills camp. The participants will be given the opportunity to work on the fundamentals of each position on offense and defense. Each day will end with a game of flag football. The Lady Wolverines surged in the fourth inning to earn another upset in its WPIAL Class-3A playoff journey. Ellwood City beat #3 seeded Waynesburg 7-4 on Thursday to advance to the WPIAL semifinals. Ellwood City beat higher seeded Deer Lakes on Tuesday. After exchanging runs early, junior Mollie Street helped Ellwood City stage a four-run fourth inning to pull away from Waynesburg. Ellwood City scored three runs in the first inning only to have Waynesburg score in each of its first two innings to tie the game at three entering the pivotal fourth inning. Gibbons, Wolverines Advance In WPIAL Playoffs With 2-1 Extra Inning Victory

Ryan Gibbons spent his time on the mound avoiding bats with an outstanding pitching effort and knocked in the game’s winning run at the plate, putting the bat on the ball and putting the Wolverines in the WPIAL quarterfinals. Gibbons, who struck out 14 in eight innings of one-hit ball, put down a squeeze bunt to score the winning run from third base to propel the Wolverines to an opening round 2-1 victory over Keystone Oaks Thursday afternoon. Riverside Boys Track Collects Four WPIAL Individual Championships

The Riverside boys track team collected a total of four championships at the WPIAL Individual Championship meet at Slippery Rock University on Wednesday. Colby Belczyk put on a show. Belczyk won the 800m in 1:54.41 setting a new school record, breaking his own record of 1:54.99 and then teamed up with Alden Wetzel, Brody Barton, and Ty Fluharty, to win the 4×400 relay team with a personal best time of 3:27.65. For the sixth consecutive season, the Wolverine softball team won a first round playoff game. Tuesday afternoon’s opening round contest was a back and forth thriller that saw 11th seeded Ellwood City put up a three spot in the top of the seventh inning to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 victory over the 6th seeded Deer Lakes Lancers. – Ellwood City scored first, as lead off batter Angie Nardone doubled into left center and scored on a two out RBI single to right by Aliya Garroway. PHOTOS: EC Softball Drops Section Finale To South Park, Turns Attention To WPIAL Playoffs

Last week, the Wolverines traveled to South Park and cruised to a 12-3 victory, but on Wednesday evening, the Eagles turned the tables and cruised to a 9-2 win on Ellwood City Senior Night. Ellwood City seniors Maria Ioanilli and Makinley Magill were recognized prior to the game as part of the Senior Night festivities. 4-PEAT! Riverside Boys Track Takes Home WPIAL Championship

The Panthers set WPIAL history Wednesday becoming the first Class 2A track team to win four consecutive titles. The championship also makes Riverside the only Class 2A track team to win 7 WPIAL Championships. Riverside defeated Greensburg Central Catholic (84-64), South Park (95-55) and Shenango (77-73) to capture its 2021 championship. Two Ellwood City teams collected victories Tuesday afternoon with the Ellwood City Softball team defeating Beaver Falls 10-0 and the Wolverine Baseball team defeating Mohawk 7-1. The Ellwood City Junior High Softball team fell to Laurel, but finished their regular season play with a 7-2 record.
