PHOTOS: Riverside Swimming Captures Section Crown, Next Stop WPIAL Championships

The Riverside boys earned a WPIAL Section 2-AA crown last Wednesday with its senior night victory over Central Valley. This is the 21st Section Title in the program’s history. The boys overall section record is 6-1 with its lone loss to Quaker Valley. “We lost the section title last year by one point, so this will not be a consecutive title but still a major success for our boys team of only eight swimmers,” says head coach Alaina Marshall. Gabe Lilly Claims Championship In Class AA Wrestling Sectionals

Gabe Lilly claimed the crown in the 160-pound weight class at the Class AA sectionals held Saturday at Keystone Oaks High School. Forty-four teams competed. Lilly pinned both of his opponents in the semifinals and finals and his championship match victory helped him reach 100 career victories. Lilly opened up the afternoon with a technical fall victory over Aaryn Edwards (Carlynton). Lilly pinned Carmine Battaglia (Beaver County Christian) at 1:24 in the championship. Lady Wolverines Upset Seton LaSalle, Earn First Playoff Victory Since ’95

Delaney Sturgeon poured in 28 points to lead Ellwood City to its first WPIAL playoff victory since 1995 with a 49-41 upset of No. 5 seed Seton LaSalle in a Class 3A first round game played at Chartiers Valley. Sturgeon score nine of the Wolverines 12 fourth quarter points as Ellwood City pulled away for the victory. Ellwood City held a two point lead at halftime and a slim 37-36 advantage after three quarters before using a 12-5 spurt in the final frame to secure the victory. PLAYOFFS! Three Local Basketball Teams Qualify For WPIAL Playoffs

For the second consecutive season both the Ellwood City boys and girls basketball teams have qualified for their respective WPIAL Playoffs. The Riverside Panthers girls basketball team has also qualified for the WPIAL Playoffs. The Lady Wolverines (13-8, 8-6 Section 1-3A), who drew a #10 seed, will travel to Chartiers Valley HS on Friday evening to face #5 Seton LaSalle in opening round action. Evan Skinner led a trio of Panthers scoring in double figures Friday night as Riverside knocked off New Brighton 65-36 on Senior Night. Skinner finished with four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 18 points in the victory. Will Sullivan (16 points) and McCartney Plassmeyer (10 points) joined Skinner in double figures. Skinner poured in 13 first half points as Riverside raced out to a 36-17 halftime advantage. Riverside Boys Swimming Team Earns Runner-Up Finish At Beaver County Championships

The Riverside Varsity Swimming competed at the Beaver County Swim and Dive Championships last weekend at Beaver Area High School The Riverside Boys Team earned runner-up for the meet while the Riverside Girls Team finished 5th. This is a new meet added for the teams this season where six schools from Beaver County met to compete. Beaver, Beaver Falls, Blackhawk, Central Valley, and Hopewell joined Riverside at the championships. The Riverside girls basketball team easily dispatched of visiting New Brighton Thursday night during its senior night contest. The Lady Panthers defeated the Lions 60-7 to help run their regular season record to 14-8 Overall. DeLana Fox and Camryn Friello each scored 11 points for Riverside. Emma Meyer also reached double figures with 10 points in the victory. Riverside now sits at 9-5 in Section 1-3A along with Beaver Falls, both one game ahead of Ellwood City. It was a long evening Tuesday as the Ellwood City boys and girls basketball squads teamed up for a senior night double header against Beaver Falls. Ellwood Area Family Center Hosting Youth Golf Program

The Ellwood Area Family Center will be hosting a youth golf program beginning in late February. The golf program will be held at the Ellwood Area Family Center on the North Side of Ellwood City on Tuesday evenings beginning on February 18th. The clinic will run four five consecutive Tuesdays and will be available for ages 9, 10 and 11. Kayla Jones poured in 15 first half points to lead Ellwood City to a comfortable 74-39 victory over Sto-Rox Thursday night at Lincoln High School. The scoring performance helped Jones top 1,000 career points. The senior guard finished 5-10 shooting with one 3-pointer, two rebounds, and three assists Thursday in the non-section contest.
