HOMECOMING: Panthers Secure Playoff Spot With Friday Night Victory

For the Riverside Panthers, Friday night’s 28-26 victory over North Catholic was twice as nice as it secured second place in the Midwestern Athletic Conference and a home WPIAL Class 2A playoff berth as well as cemented a tone of revenge for last year’s blowout loss to the Trojans. The Panthers (5-2 overall, 5-1 conference) used the big play – 95-yard kick off return by LeMarcus Cleckley – as well as a clutch play – a 19-yard fourth-down pass from Ben Hughes to Austin Dambach – to stay in front of the visiting Trojans. The game came down to a…

Recap article courtesy of Bradley Windhorst/The Wolverines Official Website. Derry has been one of the bigger surprises in WPIALs, coming into last night’s game 7-0 (5-0) playing an extra game during week 0.  Derry has had several historic teams and is rich in tradition, but only has gone to the playoffs once since 2002.  That will change this year. Derry came into the match-up against the Wolverines already locking up a playoff berth in the WPIALs. The question of the night was how would Derry match up against a team from the toughest 3A conference?  At first things looked gloomy,…

Ellwood’s Homecoming Game Recap and Gallery Photos

Ellwood City’s Homecoming game recap taken from the Wolverines site: Scoring has been at a minimum for the Wolverines through the first half of the year.  That may be due to the fact that each opponent up till Friday night has been in the top half of their respectable division.  However, Valley seemed like a good opportunity to look for that first W on the season. The first quarter of the game involved a “cat and mouse” battle between the Vikings and the Wolverines where both teams had the ball at least twice and were not able to do anything…

PHOTOS: Wolverine offense struggles, Hopewell prevails

Points scored in football games is usually done by the offensive side of the ball.  For fans who love the up-tempo offense, quick scores, and plenty of scrimmage yards, Friday night’s game vs. Hopewell would have been an eyesore of drives that just didn’t finish. Between Hopewell and the Wolverines, over 100 plays were taken on the night.  However, the snaps only mounted to a game total of 431 offensive yards from both teams together.  With that being said, drama did occur late in the game. Ellwood City scored on its opening possession thanks to a converted 3rd-and-8 by running back Donavin…

Riverside Panthers used defense and a steady ground attack to get its first win of the young season Friday night at Laurel. The Panthers were aided by its defense forcing two turnovers, one a pick-6 interception, to stymie the Laurel offense in its 24-7 victory. Ellwood City Police Not Securing Home Game Tonight

It was mentioned in a previous post that Ellwood City School District is forced to hire private security instead of having Ellwood City Police securing the home games like they have been doing for years. The issue stems from the borough being unable to comply with the schools security needs at this time, mainly due to an ongoing uncertainty regarding how many officers they would need to hire per game. At the school board meeting last night, the school board president, Renne Pitrelli, stated that the issue between the school and borough has not yet resolved and the school has…
