Ellwood City Wrestlers Win First Section Match

The Ellwood City wrestling team defeated Central Valley 37 to 24 in an away match on Wednesday, Dec. 9 In the decisive matches, Sophomore Tyler Baird won a 10-2 decision over Michael Caponera, and junior Tyler Alberts defeated Derrick Knox 5-0. Nine out of the 14 matches were decided by forfeits, making the contested matches all the more important. Winter Sports Preview 3: With an Experienced Lineup, Lady Panthers Looking to Successful Season

Experience is one thing the Lady Panthers have in abundance. Going into the 2015-16 season, the girls have six seniors fresh from a 19-4 season last year. Having finished 9-3 in their class AA section and advanced to the first round of playoffs, the Riverside girls basketball team is of course aiming for those goals again. Riverside’s Lady Panthers Win Two This Week, Remain Undefeated

After a successful tip off tournament, the Riverside Lady Panthers traveled to Eden Christian Academy on Monday for a win. Riverside defeated ECA 62-21. With a true display of team versatility, four players scored in the double digits: Kaite Stang with 14 points, Ashely Boehm and Sydney Wolf with 11, and Morgan Bailey with 10. Defensively, Riverside collected 23 total rebounds, and Abbey Matiko blocked two shots. Lady Wolverines Fall Behind Early, Lose to Ambridge

The Ambridge Bridgers defeated the Ellwood City Lady Wolverines 55-44 in a home non-conference game yesterday. The game was the first section challenge for Ellwood City. Had Ellwood reached their potential by the third quarter, they may have won. Ambridge consistently outscored Ellwood for the first three quarters, closing at 50-27. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Wolverines exploded, scoring 17 to Ambridge’s 4, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. Winter Sports Preview 2: Lady Wolverines Shooting for a Second Playoff Run

Last year was an exciting year for the Lady Wolverines. For the first time in 17 years, the Ellwood girls basketball team, under coach Jolene Krupa, advanced to the playoffs. The elation of the playoff season was short lived with a loss in the first game against Ford City. The season ended with total record of 12-11 overall and 5-7 in conference. Lady Wolverines Bring in Two Wins

The Lady Wolverines earned their first wins of the season in two non-conference games. On Monday, Ellwood City hosted Union, thrashing them 50-3. They followed that with another home win yesterday against Knoch with a score of 40-34. Against Union, Ellwood’s quintuple of seniors could not be stopped, scoring 48 of the team’s points. Allie McKelvey and Karrington Ketterer led the charge with 16 and 10 points. Against Knoch, the Lady Wolverines faced a serious challenge, not securing a win until the decisive final quarter, scoring 11-6. Winter Sports Preview 1: Ellwood City Wrestling

As a sophomore, Tyler Albers won the wrestling MAC tournament, placed third in the WPIAL and advanced to the PIAA state tournament. This year, as a junior, he’s hoping to improve that performance. In addition, six other Ellwood City wrestlers qualified for the WPIAL championships last season. Riverside Girls Get the Best of Ellwood at Tip Off Tournament

The Lady Panthers and Lady Wolverines both have an exciting season to look forward to. Both teams are returning the core of their members and both teams advanced to playoffs last season but lost the first game. Ellwood City, Class AAA, is returning five seniors, including lead scorer Karrington Ketterer. Riverside, class AA, returns six seniors. The two teams started the season against each other in a clash Friday night at Lincoln High School. Riverside was ultimately victorious.
