PHOTOS: Ellwood City Notches Victory Over Rival Riverside

The Ellwood City Wolverines withstood a late comeback from rival Riverside Friday night, but held on and came out victorious with a 51-48 victory. In front of a capacity crowd at the Panther gymnasium, the Wolverines took a second quarter lead and never relinquished the lead through an fast-paced final quarter. Ellwood City saw its largest lead in the third quarter when an 11-0 scoring run – aided by eight Riverside turnovers – pushed their lead to 38-27. Weekly High School Basketball Team Recaps

This week the Ellwood City Boys Varsity team played a very close game against Rochester, defeating them by a mere two points. Rochester took the lead in the second quarter but Ellwood regained control in the third and fourth, ending the game with a close 64-62 victory. Forward Sean Busby was recognized as the “player of the game.” Tonight the Ellwood City Wolverines will face off against their long-time rival, the Panthers at Riverside High School. Riverside Players to be Presented with WPIAL Championship Rings

Tomorrow the players of Riverside’s 2017 varsity baseball team will be receiving their WPIAL Championship rings during the basketball match against Ellwood City. This is the fifth year for Riverside to win the WPIAL Championship. The team won their 2017 season 19-2, losing their last game to Central. The date of the ring presentation was only coincidental, according to Dan Oliastro, head coach of the team. “This was the only game date we could get all of the players together to present the rings. Ellwood City Wolverines Defeat Rochester

Ellwood City defeated Rochester 64-62 on Wednesday after an evenly matched game that saw neither team lead by more than six points. After the game worked its way to another tie late in the fourth quarter, Ellwood City used back to back three-pointers from Anthony Roth and Broc Boariu to stretch out to their biggest lead in the contest at 56-50. Sydney Wolf Captures 1,000th Career Point In Riverside Victory

Lady Panther senior Sydney Wolf scored a game high 25 points Thursday, surpassing 1,000 career points, in 56-38 victory over Hopewell in their opening game of the LGKG Holiday Classic. Riverside outscored the Vikings 24-6 in a decisive 3rd quarter that pushed their slim, 2-point halftime lead. Marley Wolf and Brielle Chesko also finished in double figures for Riverside with 10 points apiece. Wolverines Complete Comeback, Defeat Union Area 55-51

The Ellwood City Wolverines erased two 21-point deficits in the first half Thursday night in their dramatic 55-51 comeback victory against Union Area in the opening game of their Neshannock Christmas tournament. Ellwood City’s pre-Christmas game against New Brighton, 12/22/2017 Despite Anthony Roth putting 26 points on the board, Lincoln lost to New Brighton 52-50. New Brighton (PA) locked in the win in the fourth quarter on a three pointer from Thomas Kirby. Despite a strong finish, with 16 points in the final quarter, Ellwood City Wolverines failed to secure the win. This week the Ellwood City Boys Varsity team played against Freedom and Steel Valley earlier this week, collecting victories in both games and bringing their overall score to 5-2.  The Wolverines ousted the Bulldogs 78-62 on Monday and defeated Steel Valley 54-42 on Tuesday. Ellwood City boys will open up section play tonight hosting the New Brighton Lions starting at 7:30p.m. Riverside’s Boys Varsity team played against Aliquippa on Wednesday, losing to the top ranked and undefeated ‘Quips 66-35. Munhall, PA– Lincoln won 55-42 against Steel Valley on Wednesday with the help of Anthony Roth, who scored 25 points, including 17 points in a decisive 3rd quarter for the Wolverines. Ellwood City Wolverines clinched their lead in the third quarter on a free throw from Roth. Lincoln came back with a vengeance in the final two quarters, after being behind early in the game, trailing 23-19 at the half. The Wolverines emerged victorious 78-62 against Freedom on Tuesday on the strength of Anthony Roth, who scored 31 points. Ellwood City had an early scoring surge, running out to an early double digit lead and claiming a 41-32 lead at the half. Lincoln solidified their lead in the final quarter, scoring 24 points. Roth led the charge for the Wolverine offense, scoring 31 points (10-17 shooting, one 3-pointers), with 11 points during the fourth period.
