Mercer County 4-H Benefit Auction

Mercer County 4-H will hold its annual benefit auction on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at the Mercer County 4-H Park, located on Route 19, 1.5 miles north of Mercer. Festivities begin with the kitchen opening at 5:30 p.m. and the auction beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Show Arena. This event helps raise money to support the Mercer County 4-H Program. Proceeds help fund educational materials, programs, trips, and seminars, and to maintain, upgrade and improve our 4-H Park. Currently, Mercer County has 24 4-H clubs and over 240 4-H members, who participate in numerous educational activities throughout the year….

Koppel Bridge Replacement Project On Target, Detour Scheduled This Summer

According to PENNDOT Press Officer Steve Cowan, the $27.58 million dollar Koppel Bridge replacement project is progressing well. “Crews have one half of the deck rebar tied and are working on the other half of the bridge,” said Cowan via email. “Deck placement work should begin in early May.” An approximate three-month closure of both bridges and detour will occur from the late summer through the fall of 2019 when the new bridge and roadway will open. “Depending on several factors, the contractor is anticipating the detour to begin between July 17th and July 31st,” said Cowan. Donation Collection Begins For Fireworks Fundraiser

Eric Rayner has officially began his Fireworks Fundraiser. He will be updating the public on the progress of his efforts as well as the amount of money collected on a regular basis on his “Save the Ellwood City Fireworks 2019” Facebook page. “I will update the Facebook page every night with updates on how much was raised,” Rayner said. Hospital Develops Niche Services, Adds Doctors

The best way to support the Ellwood City Medical Center and its employees is to use it for services. According to the Medical Center’s Marketing Manager Victoria Gatto, a 14-year employee, that is vital to the hospital’s future. “We are still open,” she said. “We still have great employees here ready to treat and serve you.” Gatto said general hospital services such as x-rays and blood work are all services that will help the hospital start to generate positive cash flow. National Day Of Prayer Planned At Community Plaza

There will be a National Day of Prayer event held at the Ellwood City Community Plaza on Lawrence Avenue. The event will start at 11:45 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Badlands (the old 5th Street Diner) 225 Fifth St. There will be a complimentary Luncheon to follow at the Bandlands. World War II Pearl Harbor Survivor Turns 101

Happy (early) Birthday to Ellwood City’s Joseph Michael Gasper, who is turning 101 on Tuesday, April 23. He is our area’s last World War II Pearl Harbor Survivor. Gasper, who has lived in Ellwood City ever since he was discharged from the Army in 1945, is still very sharp and enjoys talking with his friends and family. Last year he was feted to a grand centenarian birthday party that included a gun salute from the Veterans Guard. Save The Ellwood City Fireworks Campaign Kicks Off

Ellwood City/Ellport resident Eric Rayner kicked off his “Save the Ellwood City Fireworks” campaign receiving his first donations towards his goal of 5,000.00. Penn State Master Gardeners Of Lawrence County Open Garden Hotline For The Season

The Penn State Master Gardeners of Lawrence County has opened their Garden Hotline for the 2019 Season. The Master Gardeners of Lawrence County can answer questions on a variety of topics including growing vegetables, fruits, ornamentals and turf grass, plant identification, pruning, and insect and disease problems. Advice encourages the use of integrated pest management and environmentally sound practices. To help with identification and diagnosis, plant and insect specimens can be brought to the Lawrence County Extension office located on the third floor of the courthouse during Garden Hotline hours.
