Opinion: Two Ellwood Teams Know What It Requires to Succeed

This spring I’ve had the pleasure to be a journalist in a town with two WIAL championship teams: Riverside baseball and Ellwood softball. In fact, since 2001, these two schools have collected an impressive amount of combined titles* through their four varsity ball teams. I’m not a sports fan to any extent. I’ve watched one professional sports game on television, but even I can’t be unaffected by the excitement of the season, and I hope to be writing articles for each team in the coming days. Ellwood City Lions Club Honors Winners of “Follow My Leader” Writing Contest

The Ellwood City Lions Club honored the winners of its third annual “Follow My Leader” writing contest on May 24 at the Connoquenessing Country Club. The first place winner, who was awarded a plaque and a $100 cash prize, was Olivia Morrow. The second place winner, who received a plaque and a $50 cash prize, was Ian Litz. Morrow, Litz, their parents and Tara Lombardo, teacher from Hartman Elementary, were guests of the Lions at the May 24 meeting. Class of 1954 May Meeting

Pudue La Cava hosted the 1954 Lincoln Class “Life is a Beach” committee at her Mt Vernon Drive home on Thursday, May 12 at 4 p.m. Co-chairmen Paul Abraham and James Spielvogel presided over the session that began with lunch provided by Ann Amadio, Arlene “Pinky” Maielli, Jan Keenan, Clemmy Sirimarco, Ilene Gardner and LaCava. Dessert featured a decorated birthday cake, no candles, made by Garnder in honor of Spielvogel’s May birthday. Lady Wolverines are the WPIAL Champs

With a 10-0 mercy rule win, the Ellwood City softball team are the WPIAL champions! The Class AA championship game was played this afternoon at the University of California against South Park. Reagan Mittler’s grand slam in the first inning opened the Lady Wolverine’s offense. Camille Maine’s three-run hit in the second inning brought Ellwood to 8-0. With two more runs in the third, Ellwood shut out South Park until the top of the fifth when the mercy rule went into affect. The full game will be covered in more detail next week. Lincoln High School awarded 117 diplomas to the Class of 2016 during graduation ceremonies yesterday in the high school auditorium. The class valedictorians, Nikol Damato and Paige Mason, gave speeches, along with student council president Carter MacMurdo and school board president Renee Pitrelli. MacMurdo, a high honor graduate, is attending the u.S. Naval Academy, which requires a rigorous application process including a nomination from a U.S. Congress member, U.S. Senator, the president or vice president. Police: Ellwood Sexual Offender Fails to Register

Failure to Register as a Sexual Offender An Ellwood City man was charged with failing to register as a sexual offender. According to the criminal complaint, Michael Paul Henry, 35, has not checked in with the state police Megan’s Law Registration Unit since March 10, 2016 and is required to do so once a month. Investigating officers checked Henry’s residence at 224 Lawrence Ave. and saw Henry through a window, but  the offender did not answer the door. Corona D’Italia Lodge #807 held their annual Mother-Daughter-Scholarship dinner Wednesday, May 4 at 5 p.m. at the Wolverine Restaurant. Members and guests were greeted and registered by Patti Kuhn, Maura Greco and their mother the lodge treasurer, Louise Vitullo. Youth Dance at Ewing Park Pool on Monday

The Ellwood City Borough will host a youth dance at the Ewing Park swimming pool on Monday, June 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. The dance is for grades 6-8 and is the second year for the event. Admission is $3. The concession stand will be open, and there will be chaperones and a DJ. “The dance is an excellent way to celebrate the start of summer vacation,” borough council member Marilyn Mancini, one of the event’s organizers, said.
