The Re-Opening Of Ellwood City Public Library

The Ellwood City Public Library, as well as all public libraries in the state of Pennsylvania, was closed to the public on March 14th and all other services were placed on hiatus due to COVID-19. For the past 10-weeks, due to the closing order from the Office of Commonwealth Libraries part of the Department of Education), staff members joined the rest of the nation in the work from home order. Pomp and Circumstance: Congratulations to Lincoln High School’s Class of 2020. Despite the challenges of honoring this year’s graduates, administration worked hard to provide as much of a traditional ceremony as possible including  the walk across the stage, photographs, filming, the speeches, the scholarship recognition, and family involvement along the way. BLM Supporter Demands Borough Officials Break the Silence

A Black Lives Matter supporter and Ellwood City resident attended Monday’s Borough Council meeting to demand action in support of the movement. “I need action,” said Mary Maine. “I need this town to step up.” She said she is disappointed that the town’s leadership did not attend the protests and said they have failed to recognize the movement. She said she wants borough officials to break the silence. Gov. Wolf Announces $225 Million Grant Program for Small Businesses Impacted by COVID-19

Governor Tom Wolf announced a $225 million statewide grant program to support small businesses that were impacted by the COVID-19 public health crisis and subsequent business closure order. “As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and shift our focus toward reopening our commonwealth, we need to help all Pennsylvanians recover. We need to provide assistance for those who were hurt by the pandemic and the resulting economic downturn,” Gov. Walley Presented With Plaque

Wrestling standout Austin Walley was presented a plaque during the June 3rd Wolves Club meeting. This plaque is a commemoration towards the seniors accomplishment of becoming Lincoln High School’s first ever champion in the PIAA Class 2A State Wrestling Championship. Walley closed out his senior year with a 45-1 record and a career mark  of 139-25.  The 182-pound Ellwood City senior earned the PIAA Wrestling Championship for with a victory over Dylan Bennett of Montoursville Area HS in March after collecting WPIAL gold in February. Lincoln High Cheerleader Food Drive

In Ellwood City, the cheerleaders from Lincoln High School came together last month to hold a food drive in hopes of being able to give back to the community amid the coronavirus pandemic. “Our girls are very giving and they have such big hearts,” said Christie Bukowski. Bukowski is the president of the Varsity and Jr. High Cheerleaders at Ellwood City. The Ellwood City Area Public Library offers a variety of weekly activities. Information is available by calling the library at 724-758-6458. Activities taking place this week include NOTICE The Ellwood City Area Public Library will be taking return books starting on Tuesday June 9. From that point on books will be accepted in specially marked return bins located in the Library’s parking lot Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Only Library books and Interlibrary Loan Books are to be placed in these bins, NO donated books please. Local Church Hosting Pizza Giveaway

Christ Presbyterian Church will be holding a community pizza give away at the church on Friday, June 12 from 4:oo PM until 6:00 PM (or when the pizza runs out, which ever comes first). The church ordered from two pizza places in town: Johnny’s and Domino’s. In total, the church purchased 100 pizzas. 2020 Lawrence County Fair Canceled

The Coronavirus pandemic that swept our planet these past few months might have seemed to cease, but the aftermath is far from over. Many local festivals and fairs, including the annual Ellwood City Arts, Crafts, and Foods Festival, have been cancelled and most recently, the Lawrence County Fair has been cancelled. In a letter released on Facebook the directors explain their plans for the upcoming, post pandemic summer. “It is with shattered hearts that we (the Board of Directors) have made the painful decision to cancel the Fair for 2020,” the letter reads.
