Local Districts Receive Safe School Grants

Several Beaver and Lawrence county school districts in the 47th Senatorial District were selected to receive state Safe School Initiative grants for the training and compensation of school resource officers and to prevent and reduce violent incidents through programs and security equipment, according to Senator Elder Vogel. The local funds were part of $6.5 million in competitive grants announced by the Pennsylvania Department of Education on Friday, November 4. Star Wars Event

The Ellwood City Public Library is having their Star Wars Event on Sat. Nov. 12 from 1p.m.-3p.m at their library location. The 501st Legion will be providing 12 costumed characters. They do a short program first, including a trivia contest and then will pose for pictures with the kids or adults in attendance afterwards. Two years ago the library had them come for the library’s 100th Birthday which drew a crowd of over 100 people. Christmas Angels Toy Drive

Mayor Advisory Meeting

Mayor Court met with his Advisory Committee on October 27, 2016 in council Chambers. Discussion revolved around illegal drug and narcotics in the area, including overdoes that are taking place in local communities throughout Pennsylvania.  Mayor Court advised that the recent Drug Take-Back Program held in October was very successful in our community.  Parking and Trick-or-Treat night in our area were also topics of discussion. Italian Heritage Website Created By Local Residents

Gene Morabito remembers his father as a man who immersed himself in the Ellwood City community.  As a prominent local contractor, Cosmo Morabito played an active role in building Ellwood City both literally and figuratively.  Cosmo passed away in 1946 when Gene was 11.  Sadly, in the 70 years since his passing, Cosmo’s contributions to the Ellwood community are largely forgotten, even by his own grandchildren.  Many of the buildings he constructed still stand, the Catholic Center, the old Ellport school among them, but few people are left who remember the builder or the local club that Cosmo started in…

False Claims Lead Newspaper to Drop Gibbons Endorsement Paper says Gibbons Manufactured Details

In a rarely seen action, The Beaver County Times today rescinded its endorsement of State Rep. Jaret Gibbons, saying he manufactured details about his opponent that he then attributed to their reporting. “We cannot support a candidate who attributes information to us that we did not write,” said Times Executive Editor Lisa Micco. The newspaper said it had planned to publish its endorsement this week, but pulled the endorsement and will now endorse challenger Aaron Bernstine. Ellwood City Christmas Parade

The annual Ellwood City Christmas Parade will march down Lawrence Avenue Saturday, December 3 at 3:30. The parade will start at the intersection of 4th Street and Lawrence Avenue and end at the intersection of 8th Street and Lawrence Avenue. Staging will take place in the Holy Redeemer School parking lot. Participants are encouraged to arrive before 2:45 and enter the lot at Crescent Avenue and 3rd Street.  Parents may drop off their children on Crescent Avenue between 3rd Street and 4th Street.
