Alfred A. Bertagna, 75

Alfred A. Bertagna, 75, of Slippery Rock Twp. passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 in the Haven Convalescent Home. Mr. Bertagna was born on May 17, 1942 in Ellwood City to the late Alfredo and Rose Strazze Bertagna. Al is a member of the Lincoln High School class of 1960, and graduated from Alliance College in 1962 with a degree in machine designing.  He also had attended classes at Youngstown State University. He worked at the Aetna Standard, Matthews Conveyor, and Herr-Voss from which he retired with over 30 years of service as a machine designer. Al was a member of the Holy…

United Fund Kick-Off

Top Floor of Old Boiler Room Taken Down

The tallest of the buildings being demolished on Lawrence Avenue, known previously as the Boiler Room, finally had the top floor removed yesterday. The building was structured with large steel beams that had to be carefully removed before it was able to be torn down to the same level as the other two old storefronts. Police cruisers blocked off a small portion of Lawrence Avenue to prepare for the collapse in case any debris fell into the roadway, none of which did. Connoquenessing Country Club to Host Murder Mystery Dinner

The Connoquenessing Country Club will be hosting a murder mystery, “Bullets in the Bathtub,” on, October 14, 2017 that is open to the public. BC3 Golfers Eye 5th WPCC Crown in Row Behind Eye-Opening Play of Latecomer

Butler, PA – The Butler County Community College golf team’s chances – and spirits – are soaring ahead of this weekend’s Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championships, as are tee shots from Tyler Good’s newfound low-ball flight setting. Wolverine Football Players Face Suspension After Incident Last Friday

Some Ellwood City football players will be facing suspension after a brawl last Friday night following the football game versus Valley. According to an article on New Castle News, Principal Kirk Lape stated the school was notified by the PIAA that players had been disqualified from the contest with Valley and will now be required to sit out Friday’s home game against Beaver. Lape, athletic director Curt Agostinelli, and head coach Nick Hand will be meeting with Valley and WPIAL officials to further discuss the incident. At this time it is unclear which individuals have been suspended.


Ellwood City PD Thank Veterinary Office for Money Raised

The Ellwood City Police Department released the following thank you to the Ellwood City Veterinary Practice for their help to raise money for canine officer Ranger: A big thank-you to Dr. Cindi Maro and Dr. Daniel Jones for raising funds for the purchase of a GPS tracking device for Ellwood City Police K9,  Ranger. The raising of funds were held in conjunction with the EC Fall Festival. Dr. Maro opened the Ellwood City  Animal Hospital 30 years ago, September 26, 1987. Woman Commits Suicide While Officers Enter Residence for Domestic Dispute

According to the police report, on October 1, officers were dispatched to a residential home on the 700 block of Bell Avenue for a domestic dispute. The caller advised that he was locked out of the residence and believed his girlfriend was inside. After officers unsuccessfully attempted to make contact with the girlfriend, they started to enter the residence through the garage, at which time they heard a gunshot followed by something hit the ground from inside the home.
