Ellwood Flag at Half-Mast in Respect for Victims of Orlando Shooting

The Ellwood City Municipal Building flag is held at half mast today in respect for the victims of the Orlando shooting yesterday. A shooter killed at least 50 people and wounded 53 others at a gay nightclub Sunday morning. The gunmen, Omar Mateen, was American-born and pledged allegiance to ISIS before the attack. Mateen was killed by a SWAT team. Ellwood City joins the rest of the nation and communities around the world in solidarity against violent extremism. Riverside Advances to Semi-Finals; Ellwood Season Over

Riverside baseball and Ellwood softball played the same school at the same time at the same place: Moniteau High School on Thursday at Slippery Rock University. Unfortunately, the results weren’t the same. Riverside continued its scoreless streak, winning 1-0 over the District IX school. Pitcher Michael Boswell struck out eight, extending his record to 40 scoreless innings. Riverside advances to the semifinals, playing Bishop McCort on Monday. Lady Wolverines are the WPIAL Champs

With a 10-0 mercy rule win, the Ellwood City softball team are the WPIAL champions! The Class AA championship game was played this afternoon at the University of California against South Park. Reagan Mittler’s grand slam in the first inning opened the Lady Wolverine’s offense. Camille Maine’s three-run hit in the second inning brought Ellwood to 8-0. With two more runs in the third, Ellwood shut out South Park until the top of the fifth when the mercy rule went into affect. The full game will be covered in more detail next week. Lincoln High School awarded 117 diplomas to the Class of 2016 during graduation ceremonies yesterday in the high school auditorium. The class valedictorians, Nikol Damato and Paige Mason, gave speeches, along with student council president Carter MacMurdo and school board president Renee Pitrelli. MacMurdo, a high honor graduate, is attending the u.S. Naval Academy, which requires a rigorous application process including a nomination from a U.S. Congress member, U.S. Senator, the president or vice president. Police: Ellwood Sexual Offender Fails to Register

Failure to Register as a Sexual Offender An Ellwood City man was charged with failing to register as a sexual offender. According to the criminal complaint, Michael Paul Henry, 35, has not checked in with the state police Megan’s Law Registration Unit since March 10, 2016 and is required to do so once a month. Investigating officers checked Henry’s residence at 224 Lawrence Ave. and saw Henry through a window, but  the offender did not answer the door.
