Library Activities For The Week Of June 3, 2019

The Ellwood City Area Public Library offers a variety of weekly activities.  Information is available by calling the library at 724-758-6458. Activities taking place this week include TUESDAY, JUNE 4 6:30 p.m. – “Family Laptime,” designed for babies as young as 6 months of age, toddlers and preschoolers. This is an interactive, family event and features stories, songs, games, finger plays and more. Registration is requested. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5 10:00 a.m. – “Coloring for Adults,” a weekly program that is free and open to the public. It is designed to help reduce stresses of everyday life. All adults are welcome….

PHOTOS: 2019 Lincoln High School Graduation

The Class of 2019 has graduated! 117 Lincoln High School seniors as well as an additional 38 students from Lawrence County Vo-Tech received diplomas as part of the ceremonies at the Leslie H. Sabo Memorial Auditorium Thursday evening. Nine students graduated with high honors: Katherine Bowser, Alex Fotia, Chloe Kuffer, Patricia McMillin, Caden Myers, Kaitlyn Navolio, Madeline Spadafore, and Reece Wilson. Riverside Beaver County School District will hold their graduation ceremonies Friday evening, beginning at 6:00pm.  According to the district, and at this time, the district anticipates the Commencement Ceremony will be held at Riverside Memorial Stadium. Ellport Borough Yard Sale, Clean Up Day Planned

Ellport Borough will be hosting two events for residents within the first two weeks of June. To kick off the summer season, there will be an Ellport Community Yard Sale on Saturday, June 1st from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Later in the month, there will be an Ellport Borough Clean-up Day, scheduled for Saturday, June 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Items can only be dropped off at that time. County Glass Recycling Program

Beginning on June 5, Beaver County residents will be able to drop off their glass items at Brady’s Run Park Recycling Center every Wednesday. The collection will be from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. The Through Beaver County’s Lens: Glass to Glass program will be collecting eyeglasses, sunglasses, and reading glasses that will be used for reuse. Products collected will be then shared with local doctors or will be sent aboard through Mission Vision for use in developing countries. PHOTOS: “Walk To Honor” In Ellwood City

The annual Ellwood City Memorial Day parade was held on Monday, May 27. The parade began on the Veterans Bridge on Fifth Street at 10:00 a.m and proceeded to Crescent Avenue, over to Eighth Street, down to Lawrence Avenue, back to Fifth and then onto Spring Avenue into Legion Park, where the 45-minute memorial event was held. The parade traveled to several veterans, local leaders spoke, the borough’s civic choral performed, and there was a flag-raising ceremony. 5 BC3 Golfers Seek Prized All-American Status At Nationals

(Slippery Rock, PA) Butler County Community College golfers Tucker Skerbetz and Carmen Oliva shot second-round 78s Tuesday to lead the Pioneers to their fourth National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Region XX crown and into the NJCAA national championships in Chautauqua, N.Y., in June. Skerbetz, a Laurel High School graduate, placed second overall with a 159 in the 36-hole Region XX tournament at Oakview Golf Club, Slippery Rock. Oliva, of Neshannock, was fifth with a 164. Wolverines Can’t Catch Up To Keystone Oaks

Ellwood City fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 7-4 loss to Keystone Oaks in the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals Wednesday. The Wolverines lost despite out-hitting Keystone Oaks 11 to seven.  Keystone Oaks collected four of their hits in a six-run first inning. In the first inning, Keystone Oaks got their offense started with two walks and two fielding errors by Ellwood City. Kids Read Now Comes To North Side Primary

On May 16, North Side Primary held a Kids Read Now reading night to kick off their newly adopted summer reading program. This program helps kids avoid losing their reading skills they gained during the school year, so when they return in the fall teachers will not have to play catch-up for as long. “[Kids Read Now was] designed to eliminate the ‘summer slide’,” Principal Christine Gibson said. “[The program is] new and exciting for the kids.” The children who participate are chosen by their teachers. Realtor.com journalist, Becky Bracken, put together a nationwide list of ten Victorian style homes under $300,000 and one Ellwood City, Pennsylvania property made the list. According to the article: Victorian architecture is an expression of the “More is more” philosophy of design, producing ornate, intricate homes that resemble giant dollhouses. The style is perennially popular and when preserved properly, results in feature-worthy dwellings.  Victorians were supercharged in the late 1800s by the development of steam-powered sawmills, which could mass-produce wood trim with ornate patterns quickly and cheaply, making complicated designs in bright colors available to everyday Americans.
