LOCAL SPORTS: EC Girls Tennis Defeats Riverside, Girls Volleyball Stays Unbeaten

The Ellwood City Girls Varsity tennis team came away with a 4-1 victory over rival Riverside on Monday. The visiting Wolverines used strong efforts by Maddy McCommons in singles play and Cassidy Navolio and Anna Williams in doubles to earn the victory. The Ellwood City Area Public Library offers a variety of weekly activities. Information is available by calling the library at 724-758-6458. NOTE: The Library will continue doing curbside pickup. GOLF ROUND-UP: EC Boys Victorious, Girls Narrowly Defeated

The Ellwood City boys golf team continued its strong play with another victory this week, defeating Mohawk 223-241 at Delmar Golf Course.  The girls golf team fell victim to Elizabeth Forward on Tuesday and, in an even closer match, were defeated by Central Valley in a playoff on Thursday. Beaver Valley Interchange on PA Turnpike to Be Closed Weekdays

According to a news release made available this week, a three-week closure is needed for resurfacing project at the Beaver Valley Interchange on PA Turnpike.  The release reads as follows: The Pennsylvania Turnpike is alerting motorists of a three-week closure of the Beaver Valley Interchange, Exit #13, in Beaver County.  Motorists will not be able to enter or exit the Turnpike at the Beaver Valley Interchange weekdays starting Sept. 21 through Oct. 9. Crews will be reconstructing the shoulders and resurfacing the ramps that lead to and from the interchange. The work will stop Friday evenings allowing traffic through the…


POLICE REPORTS: Criminal Complaints

The following are police criminal complaints filed at the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Lawrence County office of Honorable Jerry G. Cartwright. Fight On Loop Street: On Sepember 8 at approximately 8:42 p.m. officers were dispatched to a reported fight at Loop Street involving a knife. Upon arrival officers made contact with all parties involved and spoke with a white male with a bleeding laceration above his eye who appeared intoxicated. Ellwood City Girls Volleyball Team Collects Two Victories

The Ellwood City Girls Volleyball team collected two victories this week with a victory over Laurel on Monday and a second, resounding victory over New Brighton on Tuesday. On Monday, the girls team survived a second set scare from the Spartans, but were able to dispatch Laurel in straight sets, 25-14, 27-25, and 25-20. On Tuesday, the girls team easily dispatched New Brighton in straight sets, 25-17, 25-15, and 25-8 at Lincoln High School.  Junior varsity also collected straight set victories over the Lions, 25-10 and 25-11. In a strong effort by all local high school clubs, the Ellwood City girls tennis, boys golf, and girls volleyball teams were all victorious on Monday in their respective matches. For the girls tennis squad, Molly and Maddy McCommons collected straight set victories in singles play to lead the victors over Neshannock at Ewing Park Tennis Courts. Mayor Anthony J. Court has declared Tuesday, September 15, 2020 as “Angeline Riccardo Day” in Ellwood City. Mayor Court presented a proclamation in observance of Mrs. Riccardo’s 100th birthday. Mrs. Riccardo was married for 57 years to Armond Riccardo, has 3 children, James, Ron and Allan and was blessed with 8 grandchildren. “Mrs. Riccardo is an outstanding citizen that won the respect of her family, friends, neighbors and acquaintances,” said Mayor Court in a statement. Debra A. Voland, 65, of 1117 Agnew St., New Castle passed away the morning of September 10, 2020, at her residence. Debra was born June 12, 1955, in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late William E. and Mary R. (Makepeace) Newman. Debra was married to the late Harry Voland. They were married for 15 years. Debra was a high school graduate.
