Linda (Bernatz) Gottlund, 75

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom, Linda, who was a devoted mother and BFF. She left us while sleeping peacefully at The Grove in Harmony. She had just celebrated her 75th birthday and had decided that she could not take another Western Pennsylvania winter. Born to the late Richard and Elnora, Linda was the older sister of Bonita (Bonnie) Montalto, who survives. She was happily married for 22 years to Robert Bernatz, who passed away in 1994. Together they were responsible for three daughters, a Shetland pony, numerous dogs, cats, chickens and ducks,…

Ellwood City Basketball Teams Look To Build On Buzz; Boys Vie For WPIAL Repeat

A buzz was injected into the Ellwood City basketball program last year as the boys team rode the wave of a cinderella WPIAL Playoff run and captured the school’s first ever WPIAL Basketball Championship in March. Add to that a new girls head coach. PHOTOS: 2021 Wampum Christmas Parade

Wampum held its 49th Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday. Over 50 units, including cars, floats, bands and marching groups participated in the parade. which is billed as the biggest Christmas parade in Lawrence County. This year the parade was dedicated to Frank Yoho of Wayne Township, who had portrayed Santa Claus in the parade for 28 years. Yoho passed away on June 26 at the age of 81 and is greatly missed by the Wampum community.  In addition to portraying Santa, Frank lent his considerable handyman skills to the Wampum Christmas Parade Committee on projects including creating the display which…

PHOTOS: 2021 Ellwood City Light Up Night

Ellwood City held its annual Light Up Night in downtown Ellwood City on Friday with the official lighting of the Christmas tree and ensuing fireworks display. After a year hiatus, the event returned with various activities for families and vendors set up on Lawrence Avenue. A horse-drawn sleigh, a local singer, a DJ and a brass quintet playing Christmas carols all welcomed visitors for Ellwood City and the surrounding communities who descended on Lawrence Avenue for the evening. POLICE: Weekly Police Blotter

CARELESS DRIVING, ELUDING POLICE: Three New Castle individuals are charged after fleeing from police on roadways in Ellwood City on October 30. According to the criminal complaint, at approximately 1:41 a.m, police observed three side-by-side ATV utility vehicles at the intersection of Wampum Avenue and North Street playing music very loudly and revving the engines. As police exited the parking lot of 7-Eleven all three vehicles fled the area and police continued pursuit. Mayor Court Swears In New Police Officer

This week Mayor Anthony J. Court officially swore in William Daufen as a part-time police officer in the Borough of Ellwood City. “Officer Daufen brings 25 years of experience in law enforcement and is looking forward to working with him – to help protect the law abiding citizens of our community,” said Mayor Court in a statement. This brings the number of officers in Ellwood City to fourteen, including 10 full-time officers and 4 part-time officers. “We are pretty much back to full staff now, after a few retirements,” Court added. Several holiday related events are schedule to take place this weekend to kick-off December and the holiday season. MAYOR COURT: Recent Vandalism/Theft Will Not Be Tolerated

Mayor Anthony J. Court is alerting residents of Ellwood City to be on alert for a recent string of vandalism and ‘porch pirate’ thefts of packages in the Ellwood City area. The latest incident of porch piracy was a reported theft of a package dropped off by Amazon at a residence in Ewing Park. “This behavior will not be tolerated and any individual or individuals will be prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law,” says Court.
